STONY BROOK, N.Y. (8/30/08) – Edwin Gowins carried 12 times for 147 yards and two touchdowns to lead Stony Brook to a 42-26 win over Colgate Saturday night at LaValle Stadium in the season opener for both teams.
This was the first meeting between the two schools. Colgate was played without its All-American tailback
Jordan Scott (Hyattsville, MD), starting center
Ryan Gross (Beach Haven, NJ), who was injured, and quarterback
Alex Relph (Victor, NY), who left the game with 7:40 left in the first quarter with an ankle injury.
Stony Brook finished the night with 444 yards of total offense (270 rushing, 174 passing), while Colgate had 363 yards (183 rushing, 180 passing).
Freshman
Jordan McCord (Chicago, IL) was Colgate’s leading rusher carrying 21 times for 90 yards and two touchdowns, while backup quarterback
Greg Sullivan (Monroe, NY) rushed for 66 yards on 12 carries. Sulllivan completed 8-of-19 passes for 105 yards and had two interceptions. Standout wide receiver
Pat Simonds (Sidney, NY) had a career night with six receptions for 134 yards and one TD.
Colgate opened the scoring at 7:37 of the first quarter, when senior placekicker
Jacob Stein (St. Petersburg, FL) kicked the first of his two field goals from 21 yards. Stony Brook answered with four straight touchdowns to open a 28-3 lead with 5:56 left in the first half. Stein booted his second field goal with 37 seconds left in the half as Colgate trailed 28-6 at halftime.
In the third period, the Seawolves scored on their first possession using a 49-yard pass play for a 35-6 lead. Colgate answered on its second possession of the quarter when McCord scoring on a six-yard run. The Raiders missed the extra point.
After Stony Brook upped its advantage to 42-12, Colgate scored twice more for the final difference. The Raiders scored on a 67-yard pass play from wide receiver
Sam Breslin (Wayland, MA) to Simonds, and McCord tallied on a 13-yard run.
Mike Barry (Naples, FL) was Colgate’s leading tackler with eight, while
Wayne Moten (Forestville, MD) had an interception and
Carlton Walker (Columbus, OH) a quarterback sack.
