LEWISBURG, PA (4/5/08) – Christie Wiest pitched a five-hit shutout in the opener to lead the Bucknell softball team to a Patriot League doubleheader sweep over Colgate Saturday, 5-0 and 8-3, at West Fields.
In the opener, Wiest (8-9) had a perfect game through 4-2/3 innings before Colgate’s Nicole Siedhof (Canton, PA) doubled to left field. She finished with six strikeouts and no walks for the victory.
Bucknell scored four runs in the first inning. Ashley Carlson led off with a single, and after Lauren Fry reached on an error, came home on Mary Pavlovich’s single to center field. With Fry on third and Pavlovich at first, designated player Erin Curatola singled to left to plate Fry with the second run. After Cassie Lloyd lined into a double play, Pavlovich came home on Elyse Colmenero’s single and later Colmenero scored on Sherry Frick’s RBI single.
The Bison’s final run came in the second inning on Curatola’s single, scoring Carlson, who led off the inning with a walk.
In the nightcap, Colgate jumped out to a 3-0 lead with one run in the second and two in the third inning.
With two outs in the second, LaPorscha Albert (Lewisville, TX) walked and Erin Gomez (Lawrenceville, NJ) was hit by a pitch. Jesse Bentovoja (El Dorado Hills, CA) hit a fly ball to right which was dropped allowing Albert to score from second.
In the third inning, Tiana Tyeskey (Granite Bay, CA) singled to center, and Whitney Scott (Beaverton, OR) followed with an infield single. Rowe followed with a single to load the bases, before Godfrey blasted a two-run double to left field.
Bucknell got one run back in the fourth inning on Colmenero’s RBI single, before the Bison exploded for seven runs in the fifth. Katie McDonald (4-9) was the winning pitcher, allowing seven hits while walking one and striking out five.
Lacy Ver Steeg (1-4) (Elk Grove, CA) was the losing pitcher and starter for the Raiders. She worked 4.1 innings, allowing seven hits, eight runs, walking three and striking out three. McCarrick pitched the final 1.2 innings giving up one hit.
Rowe was 2-for-4, Godfrey 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Hannah, Tyeskey and Scott had one hit apiece.
Colgate (3-10, PL 0-2) will play Bucknell (12-20, PL 4-2) in other doubleheader Sunday afternoon at West Fields.
