LEWISBURG, Pa. (4/5/08) - The Colgate University women's lacrosse team overcame a three-point, second-half deficit to defeat Bucknell, 14-12, on Saturday, April 5, at Graham Field. With the victory, the Raiders remain undefeated in Patriot League play (4-0), and hold a 6-7 overall record on the year, while the Bison drop to 5-5 overall and 1-3 in conference action.
Down 12-9 with just under 16:30 to play in the second half, Colgate began to prove why it is the only team left in the Patriot League with an unblemished conference record this season. The Raider defense would not allow a goal for the rest of the game, and the offense provided five unanswered goals over the final 15 minutes. Senior Lindsay Pittard (Skaneateles, N.Y.) scored twice in the rally, including the game-winning goal at the 17:38 mark. After more than 12 minutes of scoreless action, junior Molly Carroll (Swarthmore, Pa.) gave Colgate an insurance goal with four seconds on the clock, thwarting any remaining hope of a Bucknell comeback.
Sophomore leading scorer Brie Moran (Little Silver, N.J.) paced the Raider offense with four goals on the afternoon. Junior Ashley Didio (Syracuse, N.Y.) added three goals and an assist, while sophomore Meghan Lawler (Liverpool, N.Y.) posted three goals. Pittard added an assist to her pair of goals to finish with three points, and sophomore Katie Holland (San Diego, Calif.) registered a goal and an assist in the winning effort.
Bucknell was paced by Julia Braun and Bonnie Buechel, who each contributed three goals and an assist. Carol Donahue also enjoyed a four-point game, but three of her points were assists. Sarah Collins added three goals for the Bison.
The teams traded goals for the first 7:21 of the game before Bucknell went on a 4-0 run to take a 6-2 lead. Colgate rallied to score five of the next six goals to knot the score at 7-7, but the Bison scored twice in the last 1:19 to take a 9-7 edge into the break.
In the second half, Bucknell took a three-goal lead 1:27 after returning to the field. Colgate scored twice before the 11-minute mark to make it a one-goal contest. Bucknell answered with two goals of its own before the Raiders scored five straight to win the game.
Colgate junior goalkeeper Sara Drexler (Pottstown, Pa.) made seven saves to earn the win. Bucknell goalie Alyssa DeLorenz registered 11 stops in the loss.
The Raiders earned a 29-27 edge on shots, including 12-8 in the second half. The Bison picked up 20 groundballs to Colgate's 13, but the Raiders won 17 of 28 draws. Colgate was also stellar on clears, succeeding on 15 of their 17 attempts, and interrupting 10 of Bucknell's 25 clearing chances.
Colgate plays its last regular-season game at Tyler's Field on Saturday, April 12, against Lehigh.
