HAMILTON, N.Y. (4/16/08) – Senior
Whitney Scott (Beaverton, OR) drilled three home runs to lead Colgate to a Patriot League doubleheader sweep over Army, 6-1 and 16-1, Wednesday afternoon at the Eaton Street Field.
Scott was 5-for-7 for the doubleheader with seven RBI and four runs scored. The last Colgate player to hit two home runs in a game was Natalie Rawson, when she had three against Bucknell in 2004. Scott moved into sixth place in career home runs with eight.
Colgate (7-12, PL 4-4) hit a total of five home runs in the contest as the pounded out 23 hits in the two games to move into fourth place in the Patriot League standings. Army falls to 9-31 overall and 4-8 in the league.
In the opener, Colgate scored four runs in the first inning off Army starter Veronica Barth (7-13).
Kortney Hannah (Vacaville, CA) led off the inning with a walk, and with one out, came home on
Tiana Tyeskey’s (Granite Bay, CA) homer over the right centerfield fence. Scott followed with a solo shot to the same location to give Colgate a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning,
Jessica Sabo (Hudson Falls, NY), who walked and moved to second on a wild pitch, scored on
Meg Mylan’s (Upper Montclair, NJ) RBI double.
Colgate scored its final two runs in the fifth inning on Scott’s two-run homer, scoring Tyeskey, who had singled ahead of her.
Army’s only run came in the sixth inning on a home run by second baseman Melissa Garza. The Cadets managed only four hits off Colgate pitcher
Jesse McCarrick (Oak Hill, VA) (3-6), who struck out one and walked none for the victory.
Tyeskey and Scott had two hits apiece in the opener, while Hannah, Mylan and
Vicky Ortengren (Colorado Springs, CO) had one hit apiece.
In the nightcap, Colgate exploded for nine runs in the second inning and never looked back.
Ashley Rowe (Tampa, FL), who extended her hitting streak to eight straight games, had a RBI single, Scott had a two-run homer and Mylan a three-run shot as Colgate scored four unearned runs.
The Raiders scored three more in the third inning on a RBI single by Scott and a two-run double by
Amanda Eccleston (Roseville, CA) for a 12-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Colgate tallied four more runs on Eccleston’s second two-run double, a ground out RBI by Scott and
Melissa Babb-Renta’s (Glenview, IL) RBI triple down the right field line.
Army spoiled Colgate starter Lacy Ver Steeg’s (Elk Grove, CA) (4-5) second straight shutout bid in the fifth inning on Laura Baranek’s RBI double. Ver Steeg, who shutout Army on Saturday, allowed five hits while striking out three and walking none.
Scott and Eccleston had three hits apiece and four RBI, while Tyeskey and Babb-Renta had two hits apiece in Colgate’s 16-hit attack.
