SYRACUSE, N.Y. (3/26/08) – Cross-town opponent Syracuse University handed the Colgate University women’s tennis team a 7-0 loss in a midweek match on Wednesday, March 26.
The Raiders started off the doubles competition with an 8-1 victory. Sophomores
Elise DeRose (Williamsville, N.Y.) and
Samantha Inacker (Lake Forest, Ill.) blew by Simone Kalhorn and Jacquelyn Tang at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore
Cameron Williams (Winnetka, Ill.) and freshman
Stephanie Bender (Amityville, N.Y.) dropped an 8-5 match at No. 2 doubles and freshman
Isabel Riemer (Hamburg, Germany) and sophomore
Jackie Stimmel (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) fell 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.
Highlighting the Raiders’ singles play was Bender at No. 6, squaring off with Tang. Tang took the first set 6-4, before Bender earned a 6-0 in the second set. The third set came down to a superset, which fell in Tang’s favor 13-11.
Christina Tan defeated DeRose at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 7-6 (1), and Kalhorn topped Inacker, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
Riemer lost at No. 3 singles to Maria Vasilyeva by matching 6-1 scores, and Williams fell at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-3 to Ashley Spicer. Chelsea Jones defeated Stimmel, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
Colgate falls to 7-5 on the season, while Syracuse improves to 8-11.
The Raiders will begin Patriot League play on Sunday, March 30 when they travel to Lehigh for a 10 a.m, match.
