HAMILTON, N.Y. (3/11/08)—Colgate junior attacker
Kevin Colleluori (Bethpage, N.Y.) tied his career-high with five goals to lead the Raider men’s lacrosse team to a 15-5 victory over visiting Vermont at Tyler’s Field. Colgate had four players with at least three points on the evening.
Colgate pushes its win streak to four games and its overall record to 4-2 with the win. The setback drops Vermont to 0-5 on the season. Colgate used a 12-1 run and held the Catamounts to just one goal in nearly 38 minutes.
Sophomore
Ian Murphy (Constantia, N.Y.) added a career-high four points from three goals and an assist. It is his second consecutive hat trick. Senior
Matt Lalli (Princeton Junction, N.J.) added two goals and an assist, while junior
Brandon Corp (Chittenango, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist for three points.
The Raiders got off to a slow start, needing 7:52 into the contest to take a 1-0 lead. Corp picked up a groundball off of a save by Vermont goaltender Justin Lubas and fed senior Josh Back (Guilderland, N.Y.) who put the ball low into the right corner for the score.
Vermont answered just over a minute later when Ryan Gillette beat his defender to the left side of cage and fired the ball into the near side of the net for the score. The Catamounts took the lead at the 4:44 mark off of a Parker Bunnell goal before Corp tied the game 40 seconds later.
The two squads traded goals in the final 41 seconds, with Colleluori finding the back of the cage with just nine ticks left to send Colgate into the first intermission tied at three.
Colgate sprinted out of the gates in the second quarter, tallying four unanswered goals in the first 3:13, including two in the opening 43 seconds. Four different Raiders scored during the run.
Kyle Sminkey stopped the Raiders with his first goal of the game, but the Colgate offense was too much for the Catamounts to handle. Colleluori and Corp hooked up five seconds later and Murphy added a man-up goal at the 6:01 mark to spark a 7-0 run for the Raiders. Colleluori and Murphy combined for five of those goals. The Colgate defense was outstanding as well during the stretch as it held Vermont scoreless for 20:48.
Vermont’s Andrew Kelleher registered his second goal of the game before Colgate sophomore
James Yetter (Skillman, N.J.) notched his first goal of the season to close out the game. Rookie
Andrew Mould (Wyomissing, Pa.) posted his first career point with the assist on the play.
The Raider defense was outstanding in the game, holding Vermont to just 12-of-20 on clears. Colgate also dominated in groundballs 38-20.
Senior
Chris Eck (Fairfield, Conn.) was outstanding at the faceoff “X” with a 14-2 record. Colgate overall was 19-of-24 in the restarts. Junior
Will Planer (Rumson, N.J.) picked up a game-high eight groundballs, while Eck had six.
In goal, sophomore
Tim Harrington (Lutherville, Md.) played 57 minutes and made 10 stops. Junior
Brian Cain (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and
Peter Burchfield (Berwyn, Pa.) combined for two saves. Lubas went the distance and had 14 saves for Vermont.
The Raiders return to action on March 18 when they travel to take on top-ranked Duke. Faceoff with the Blue Devils is set for 7 p.m., in Durham.
