POTSDAM, N.Y. (2/9/08) –
In a fitting end to a spirited three-year, individual rivalry, the last two Ken Dryden Award-winners, Clarkson’s David Leggio and Colgate’s Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.), backstopped their teams to a 0-0 tie on Saturday, Feb. 9, at Cheel Arena. It was the second time this season that the teams tied each other, as Colgate skates away with a 11-12-5 overall record and a 5-7-4 mark in league play, while No. 13 Clarkson stands at 16-9-3 overall and 11-3-2 in ECAC Hockey.

The shutout gives Dekanich sole possession of the Colgate shutouts record with the ninth of his career, and his fourth of the season. The deadlock added to Dekanich’s career ties record, marking his 15th. During his career, Dekanich has led Colgate to a 1-1-4 record against the Golden Knights.

Dekanich finished the game with 23 saves, including two during the overtime period, as Colgate was outshot 23-15 on the night. Leggio stopped all 15 shots he faced to earn the seventh shutout of his career.

While Dekanich and Leggio stood as the last line of defense, their teammates put on a defensive clinic in front of them. Both teams used gritty defensive play that included blocking shots, clearing rebounds from in front of their own nets, and mucking up play in the neutral zone to keep their opponent off the board. Each team had only a few quality scoring chances, but the best two netminders in ECAC Hockey over the last two years kept the puck out of the nets.

The scoreless draw was just the second in Colgate hockey history. The first came in 2005 when the Raiders battled Yale to a 0-0 tie on the road on Feb. 11.

The Raiders return home to face Rensselaer and Union on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15-16, at Starr Rink. Both games start at 7:00 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets by calling the Colgate ticket office at (315) 228-7600. Friday’s game against the Engineers will be televised live by Time Warner Sports in Upstate New York, and also on SportsNet New York on DirecTV.
