COLUMBUS, Ohio (2/24/08)—Ohio State University outscored Colgate 10-1 in the third and fourth quarters to earn a 13-6 victory over the visiting Raiders in men’s lacrosse action at North Turf Field. Junior
Brandon Corp (Chittenango, N.Y.) led the Raiders with three goals.
The Buckeyes had three players with three goals with both Joel Delgarno and Pete Poillon finishing the day with four points apiece. Jeff Ryan led all scorers on the day with two goals and three assists for five points. Ohio State (1-1) had a 45-30 advantage in shots for the game, including 21-11 in the second half.
Colgate (0-2) also got two goals from junior
Kevin Colleluori (Bethpage, N.Y.) and a goal and an assist from sophomore
Ian Murphy (Constantia, N.Y.).
Colleluori started the scoring 1:55 into the contest off of a feed from Murphy. Ohio State’s Mike Pires evened the score 59 seconds later and Jeff Ryan gave the Buckeyes their first lead with 5:55 remaining in the opening session.
The Raider offense came out in the second quarter hitting on all cylinders. Murphy registered his first tally of the year at the 10:09 mark to put Colgate in front 3-2. Ryan tied the score again for OSU, but three unanswered goals in the final 2:53 by the Raiders, including two in 49 seconds from Corp, gave Colgate a 5-3 halftime advantage.
Ohio State responded in a big way in the third quarter, finding the back of the cage on five of its 11 shots. The Buckeyes started the five-goal run just 1:01 into the period and closed it out with a score from Kevin Buchanan with one second left on the clock.
Buchanan added one more score at the start of the fourth stanza to make it a 9-5 game before Corp’s unassisted goal at the 10:31 mark stopped the six-goal run. The Buckeyes put the clamps on the Raiders again in the final 10 minutes and added four more goals to earn the 13-6 victory.
Sophomore goaltender
Tim Harrington (Lutherville, Md.) made nine saves for the game, while Ohio State’s Stefan Schroeder had 11 stops. Senior
Chris Eck (Fairfield, Conn.) was 10-of-19 at the faceoff X.
Ohio State won the groundball battle 31-23 and was 17-of-20 on clear opportunities. Colgate cleared just 12-of-20 times. Neither team had a man-up goal as there were just three penalties called in the game.
The Raiders will make their home debut on Feb. 28, hosting Saint Joseph’s on Tyler’s Field. That game is set to begin at 4 p.m.
