Women’s Lacrosse Team Gets First Win of Season, 14-9, Over La Salle

The Colgate women’s lacrosse team earned its first win of the season in its home-opener, 14-9, over La Salle on Sunday, Feb. 24, at Tyler’s Field. With the win, the Raiders improve to 1-2 on the year, while La Salle stands at 0-1.

Sophomore Meghan Lawler (Liverpool, N.Y.) led Colgate with a career-high three goals and an assist, while senior tri-captain Lindsay Pittard (Skaneateles, N.Y.) also netted three goals. Sophomore Brie Moran (Little Silver, N.J.) and senior Jessica Van der Meulen (Liverpool, N.Y.) each had a pair of goals for the Raiders, and Moran added an assist for her third consecutive three-point game.

La Salle’s offense was paced by sophomore Stefany McKee, who had four goals and two assists for a game-high six points. Allie Venuti contributed three points on two goals and a helper, while Erika Matthews and Elizabeth Iacullo added two points each.

Colgate jumped out to a 3-1 lead six minutes into the game on goals by junior Molly Carroll (Swarthmore, Pa.), Van der Meulen, and Lawler. But the Explorers scored two of the next three to make it a one-goal game, 4-3, with 17:09 left to play. However, the Raiders used their home-field advantage to take an 8-4 lead with a 4-1 run before La Salle netted a goal with six seconds on the clock to set the score at 8-5 heading into the break.

The Raiders scored the first two goals of the second half to double-up La Salle, 10-5, but the Explorers answered with their sixth goal of the afternoon with 22:52 left. Neither team scored for nearly eight more minutes until Colgate junior Ashley Didio (Syracuse, N.Y.) found the back of the net to put Colgate up 11-6. La Salle responded with back-to-back goals to make it a three-point game, but the Raiders scored three of the last four to earn the win.

Colgate junior Sara Drexler (Pottstown, Pa.) earned the win between the pipes after making 10 saves. Mara Schellenbach started the game in net for La Salle, and made seven saves on 16 shots before being replaced by Ellen Axelsen at halftime. Axelsen recorded five saves on 10 shots in the second half.

The Raiders are back at Tyler’s Field on Wednesday, Feb. 27, when they host local rival Cornell at 4:00 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the gate, or by calling the Colgate ticket office at (315) 228-7600.
