PRINCETON, N.J. (2/22/08) – After outscoring its opponents 14-1 over its last four games, the tables were turned on the Colgate men’s hockey team in a 7-2 loss to No. 15/17 Princeton on Friday, Feb. 22, at Hobey Baker Rink. The loss leads the Raiders with a 13-13-5 overall record and a 7-8-4 mark in ECAC Hockey play, while the second-place Tigers stand at 16-10-0 overall and 13-7-0 in the league.
The Tigers ended Colgate senior goaltender
Mark Dekanich’s (North Vancouver, B.C.) record-setting shutout streak 5:02 into the game. Freshman Kevin Lohry sent a breakout pass to classmate Mike Kramer, who beat two defenders to give himself a breakaway. Kramer slipped the puck past Dekanich to end the Raider netminder’s streak at 217:16.
Just over six minutes later, Colgate scored the equalizer. Sophomore
Ethan Cox (Richmond, B.C.) carried the puck deep into the left corner, where he dropped it off for classmate
Jason Williams (Plattsburgh, N.Y.). Williams skated behind the net and tried for a wrap-around, but the puck sailed through the crease and got tangled in the skates of junior
Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.) and the Tiger who was defending him. Bogdanich kicked the puck onto his stick, then flicked it past Kalemba during the confusion.
Dekanich helped keep it a tied game for the rest of the period, stopping 14 of the 15 shots he face in the period as his team was outshot 15-6. But he was victimized by a couple of defensive errors in the second period that allowed Princeton to take a 3-1 lead. Four minutes into the frame, the Raiders were attempting to clear the puck out of their own end, but turned it over just inside the blue line. It was taken away by sophomore Cam MacIntyre, who dropped a pass down to junior Lee Jubinville in the left circle. Jubinville used a quick shot to beat Dekanich, five-hole.
Princeton scored its third goal on one of the six breakaway chances it had during the game. With Colgate on the power play, Tiger junior Brett Wilson gained possession and sent the puck ahead for Jubinville, who skated in unchallenged on Dekanich before beating him glove-side. It was the first shorthanded goal the Raiders have given up this season.
Colgate made it a one-goal game once again at the 11:26 mark. With Dekanich on the bench on a delayed penalty, senior
Tyler Burton (Langley, B.C.) battled for control of the puck in the left corner. He dug it out to senior captain
Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.) who skated with it up to the blue line, just to the right of center. Winchester passed across to junior
Jason Fredricks (Eagle River, Wis.) on the left point, and Fredricks fired a shot through traffic that found twine to make the score 3-2 heading into the final period.
Less than five minutes into the third, Princeton scored on the power play to go up 4-2. The Tigers cycled the puck down low, with senior Mike Moore giving it to Jubinville. Jubinville found freshman Taylor Fedun low on the right side, and he slid the puck past Dekanich for his fourth goal of the year.
Just 81 seconds later, the Tigers used a 2-on-1 play to make it a 5-2 game. Moore broke the play toward the other end, and Lohry and sophomore Kevin Kaiser skated in with one Raider to beat. Kaiser shot from the right circle to beat Dekanich, glove-side.
Colgate head coach
Don Vaughan decided that Dekanich had had enough with 3:13 left in the game, and pulled him in favor of sophomore
Charles Long (Cleveland, Ohio), who made his first appearance of the season. Dekanich left the game after making 34 saves.
The Tigers continued to pour on the offense, and got a shot past Long less than a minute after he took over the crease. After Lohry put a shot on goal, Princeton crashed the net. Kaiser got a stick on the puck before freshman Cam Ritchie stuffed it between Long's pad and the left post.
Princeton tacked on another goal, its third breakaway score of the night, with 49 seconds on the clock. Sophomore Jody Pederson broke Wilson toward the other end, and he beat Long top-shelf.
The Tigers outshot Colgate 43-17 on the night, but the Raiders earned the edge in the faceoff circle, 44-36.
The Raiders are back on the ice on Sunday, Feb. 24, when they visit Quinnipiac for a 12:30 p.m., game. The contest will be televised live on NESN.
