HAMILTON, N.Y. (12/6/08) – Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) and
Austin Smith (Dallas, Texas) each posted two-point performances as Colgate and Clarkson battled to a 3-3 draw in the 135
th meeting between the two schools, Saturday afternoon at Starr Rink.
Colgate moved to 4-7-3 overall, 1-4-3 in ECAC Hockey action, while Clarkson now stands at 2-8-4, 1-6-1 in league play.
Golden Knight senior Chris D’Alvise posted his second goal of the game at 19:21 of the second period, from Phil Paquet and Matt Beca to knot the game at 3-3.
Clarkson outshot Colgate 11-6 in the third period, but Raider net minder
Charles Long (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) remained tough and saved all 11 shots he faced. The Golden Knights had to kill off a penalty in the final 1:44 of the third period to force overtime. Colgate had a few chances in the extra five-minute session, but Paul Karpowich saved all five shot attempts.
It didn’t take the Raiders long to get on the board from the opening face-off. On the power play, Day netted his ninth of the year and second on the weekend at 1:55 of the opening period to give Colgate the advantage.
Jason Fredricks (Eagle River, Wis.) and Smith were credited with assists.
The Golden Knights came back at 10:43 of the first as Lauri Tuohimaa deflected a shot out of mid air and found the back of the cage. Scott Freeman and Julien Cayer received helpers on the sophomore’s eighth goal of the year.
Colgate regained the lead 20 seconds later, as Smith won the draw and Day retrieved the puck. The sophomore hit a streaking
Francois Brisebois (Montreal, Que.) down the right side boards and moved in on the goalie. Brisebois ripped a wrist shot that found the upper right portion of the cage at 11:03. It was the sophomore’s fifth of the year. Colgate led 2-1 after the first.
At the start of the second period, Clarkson evened the game 25 seconds into the frame as D’Alvise put a shot on net that happened to roll down Long’s back and into the net.
At 9:17 of the second,
Mark Anderson (Hastings, Neb.) and
Ethan Cox (Richmond, B.C.) teamed up with
David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.). The junior beat Karpowich for his second of the weekend and fifth of the year.
Colgate outshot Clarkson 33-29 on the afternoon and both teams went one of five on the power play.
Karpowich saved 30 shots for the Golden Knights, while Long turned aside 26 in net for the Raiders.
Colgate returns to action December 27 as it travels to Estero, Fla., to compete in the Florida College Classic at Germain Arena. The Raiders will square off with the University of Maine in the opening round.
