HAMILTON, N.Y. (12/3/08) – Tyrece Gibbs scored a game-high 19 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the University of New Hampshire (2-3) to a 57-54 non-conference win over Colgate (2-4) Wednesday night at Cotterell Court.
The Wildcats snapped a three-game losing streak, while Colgate went down to its fourth straight loss.
Other UNH players in double figures were Tyrone Conley with 11 points and Alvin Abreu with 10. Colgate was led by
Mike Venezia (Westfield, NJ) with 15 points and
Ben Jonson (Dallas, TX) with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Alex Woodhouse (Alexandria, VA) had eight points and nine rebounds for the Raiders.
The Wildcats shot 50 percent from behind the arc, making 12-of-24 attempts, while Colgate was 5-of-13. The Raiders were only 9-of-20 from the foul line.
UNH led for the majority of the first half as they hit on 7-of-12 3-pointers to take a seven-point advantage at halftime, 23-16.
In the second half, the Wildcats were able to open a 10-point lead, 37-27, with 12:30 remaining. Colgate rallied to take a 43-42 lead with 6:26 left when Woodhouse made a pair of free throws, and Venezia nailed a 3-pointer for the lead.
With 2:19 left,
Joe Hoban (West Chester, PA) made a layup to give Colgate a four-point lead, 53-49. Gibbs then made back-to-back long range 3-pointers to put the Wildcats back in the lead for good.
Colgate shot 43 percent from the field, while UNH made 38 percent. The Raiders held the rebounding edge, 34-32.
Colgate will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when it plays host to Harvard at 2 p.m.
