WASHINGTON, D.C. (11/7/08) – American scored twice in the opening 11 minutes of the contest en route to a 5-1 victory over Colgate in the first game of the 2008 Patriot League Field Hockey Tournament, Friday at Jacobs Field.
Irene Schickhardt led five different scorers with a goal and an assist as the 19th-ranked Eagles improved to 11-7 overall, while Colgate’s year ended at 9-9 overall. American will face the winner of the Lafayette/Bucknell game for the tournament title, Saturday.
Savannah Graybill and Anne Van Erp connected on goals at 8:34 and 10:23 respectively to give the Eagles all they would need. Schickhardt increased the advantage to 3-0 with her 15th of the year at 29:51.
Down by three, Colgate cut the deficit to 3-1 just 33 seconds into the second half as a pair of PL all-conference performers hooked up on the Raiders’ score. Second team selection
Katelyn Nerbonne (Bow, N.H.) fed first team honoree
Lauren Carey (Medfield, Mass.) with a pass and the senior cashed in on her 12
th goal of the year at 35:33. With the senior’s goal, she closed her career with 81 points, just two points shy of joining Lynne Wertz for the all-time point lead at Colgate.
American received goals from Rachel Carney and Melissa Casale at 38:42 and 59:35 respectively to put the contest away.
American outshot Colgate 16-8.
Sarah Pedersen (State College, Pa.) made four saves for the Raiders in the loss.
