Colgate Hockey Falls to #3 Colorado College

Austin Smith netted his first shorthanded goal versus the Tigers
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. (11/29/08) –   Tyler Johnson scored the game winning goal and Richard Bachman made it stand up as third ranked Colorado College escaped for its life with a 3-2 victory over visiting Colgate, Saturday evening at the Colorado Springs World Arena.

Johnson’s first goal of the year 5:30 into the third period gave Colorado College a two goal cushion.  Bachman made some very crucial saves down the stretch, including stopping a breakaway and a point blank shot in front of the cage with 5:10 left in the game to preserve the victory.

With the win, Colorado College moves to 9-4-3, while Colgate fell to 4-6-2 overall.

With Francois Brisebois (Montreal, Que.) in the penalty box for tripping, Colgate got on the board first as it posted its second shorthanded goal of the year.  David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) picked up the puck in the defensive zone and cruised into the offensive zone.  The junior dropped the puck off to Austin Smith (Dallas, Texas), who buried his fifth goal of the year by Bachman with 6:07 left in the first period.  It was the fourth consecutive game in which Colorado College allowed a shorthanded goal.

The Raiders controlled the play for much of the first period, outshooting the Tigers 13-12.  The Raiders also killed off three penalties in the first period.

Making his second collegiate start, Alex Evin (Castlegar, B.C.) kept Colgate ahead as the freshman stuffed All-American Chad Rau on a breakaway three minutes into the second period.  However, the Tigers solved Evin at 6:11 as Bill Sweat blasted a shot into the cage from the right side, just inside the blueline.  Eric Walsky and Rau were credited with assists.

The Tigers captured their first lead of the contest with just under a minute left as Nick Dineen and Mike Testwuide teamed up with Kris Fredheim.  The junior beat Evin from in the slot with 54 seconds left for his first of the year.

Colgate had a great chance to knot the game back up one minute into the third period as Tom Riley (Ottawa, Ont.) broke in on Bachman all alone, made two moves, but the junior reached out and saved the shot before it crossed the line.

After Johnson gave CC its two-goal advantage 5:30 into the third, the Raiders answered with an even strength goal 18 seconds later.  Riley fed Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.) and the senior blasted the puck into the cage for his first of the year at 5:48.  Mark Anderson (Hastings, Neb.) received an assist on Bogdanich's goal.

Evin turned aside 22 shots in the loss for Colgate, while Bachman was credited with 24 saves.

Colgate returns to action Friday evening as it hosts ECAC rival St. Lawrence.  Opening face-off at Starr Rink is set for 7 p.m.
