HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/13/08) – Ben Scrivens made 40 saves to pace #14 Cornell to a 4-1 victory over Colgate, Thursday evening in an ECAC Hockey men’s clash at Starr Rink.
Big Red, who moved to 2-0-1 on the young season, scored two power play goals in the opening 7:30 of the contest and never looked back.
“Special teams killed us,” said Colgate head coach
Don Vaughan. “Tonight, we made four glaring mistakes and they all found their way to the back of the next.
“When you dig yourself a whole against Cornell, you are in for an up hill battle,” continued Vaughan. “They are a very solid team, especially when they have the lead. Our energy got better in the second period, but it wasn’t there for the entire game.”
Cornell capitalized 16 seconds into a power play as Colin Greening cashed in on his first of the year from Evan Barlow and Blake Gallagher at 1:48 of the opening period. That goal ended Colgate’s streak of 26 consecutive penalty kills.
At 7:25, Greening and Riley Nash connected with Jordan Berk for another man advantage goal. The first period ended with a two-goal Cornell advantage.
Tyler Mugford increased Cornell’s lead to 3-0 as the senior took a feed from Barlow in front of the cage and slid it into the cage.
Colgate, now 4-3 on the season and 1-2 in league play, solved Scrivens early in the third period. Sophomore
Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) banged in his sixth goal of the year from
David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) just 59 seconds into the final period. However, Cornell recaptured its three-game lead as Michael Kennedy cashed in on Big Red’s third power play goal of the evening at 14:09 from Mike Devin.
For the evening, Cornell converted three goals in seven power play opportunities, while Colgate was held scoreless on nine attempts. The Raiders finished with a healthy shot advantage, outshooting Big Red 41-18 on the evening.
Charles Long (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) stopped 12 shots in 54:09 of work before freshman
Alex Evin (Castlegar, B.C.) closed out the game with two saves.
Colgate and Cornell will finish the back end of the home and home, Saturday in Ithaca. Drop of the puck is at 7 p.m.
