HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/1/2008) –Mercyhurst forward Geena Prough scored with six seconds remaining in overtime to give the Lakers a 4-3 victory over the Colgate women’s hockey team Saturday, Nov. 1 at Starr Rink. The loss was the first for the Raiders at home this season.
With 21 seconds remaining Mercyhurst was able to win a face-off in the Raiders zone and circle the puck around to Lauren Ragen who snapped a shot at Colgate sophomore goaltender
Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.). Plendrleith made the initial pad save but gave up an open net rebound to Prough.
Colgate’s scoring was highlighted by senior
Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.) and junior
Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) who recorded a goal and an assist apiece.
Mercyhurst opened the scoring with an even strength goal from Jesse Scanzano with 4:36 remaining in the first period. Dosdall responded two-minutes later with her second goal of the season. Dosdall received a nice pass from senior
Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) for a one-timer from the top of the slot that blew past Lakers goaltender Hillary Pattenden. The two squads went to the first intermission knotted 1-1, with Mercyhurst out-shooting the Raiders 12-6.
Stewart gave the Raiders their only lead of the game 2-1 early into the second period when she tipped a rebound past Pattenden. Sophomore
Hannah Milan (Great Barrington, Mass.) took the initial shot off a feed from Dosdall. The Lakers would respond 30 seconds later to tie the game 2-2 on a goal from Kelley Steadman. Steadman would give Mercyhurst the lead again 3-2 on her second goal of the period at the 19:32 mark.
Junior
Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.) tied the game 3-3 half-way through the third with a power-play goal from the left circle. Dombovy was setup by junior
Evan Minnick (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and sophomore
Jessi Waters (Menlo Park, Calif.). The Raiders out-shot Mercyhurst 9-5 in the third but could not break the tie. Mercyhurst out-shot the Raiders 36-24 for the game, 5-1 in the overtime.
Plenderleith made 32 saves in the loss while Pattenden recorded 21 for Mercyhurst. Colgate finished 3-7 on the power play while the Lakers went 1-6.
Colgate (5-4) will stay home next week as it opens ECAC Hockey action hosting Quinnipiac on Friday, Nov. 7. The opening face-off is slated for 7 p.m.
