Cornell Downs Colgate in Field Hockey

Lauren Carey moved into second place on Colgate's all-time point list in loss to Cornell.
HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/9/08) – Kelley Kantarian scored three times and Catie De Stio added a goal and two assists as visiting Cornell ended Colgate’s five-game win streak with a 6-4 victory, Thursday evening in a non conference field hockey clash at Tyler’s Field.

With the game knotted at 4-4, the duo gave Big Red the lead for good  at 59:53 as De Stio set up Kantarian for her third of the evening.  Cornell added an insurance goal at 65:07 as De Stio poked home her fourth goal of the year off a pass from Kantarian.

Colgate, which fell to 8-5 overall, broke out on top at 6:30 as Lauren Carey (Medfield, Mass.) blasted the first of her two goals off a penalty corner.  Maddie Watrobski (Penfield, N.Y.) and Mika Ella-Tang (Port of Spain, Trinidad) registered assists on the senior’s seventh marker of the campaign.

After Cornell took the lead, Katelyn Nerbonne (Bow, N.H.) collected a pass from Laura Flisnik (Marcy, N.Y.) inside and beat goalie Melanie Jue for her third of the year.

Trailing 3-2 at intermission, Colgate drew first blood in the second half at 36:22 as Ella-Tang poked home her fifth goal of the year off a pass from Nerbonne.

At 47:57, Abbi Horn gave Cornell the lead once again off a corner from Mattie Prodanovic and Natalie Appelton.  Carey registered the equalizer at 58:54 off another corner from Watrobski and Ella-Tang.  However, the tie didn’t last for long as Kantarian scored the go ahead goal 59 seconds later.

The loss overshadowed the feat of Carey.  With her two goals, the senior moved by Maggie Montaigne into second on the all-time point list at Colgate (71) and into a tie for third on the all-time goal list with Ruthie Lynn (30).

Jue made seven saves in net for Cornell, which improved to 7-4 overall, while Sarah Pedersen (State College, Pa.) tallied five saves for Colgate.
