Colgate Men Down Cornell

HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/21/08) -   The Colgate University men’s soccer team defeated area rival Cornell, 2-0 in Tuesday night action at Van Doren Field.

The constant rain and cold temperature made for a rough first half of play, but the Raiders were able to outshoot the Big Red 13-4.  Cornell’s goalkeeper, Steve Lesser had five saves in the first half to keep Colgate scoreless as both teams headed into the break 0-0.

Freshman Matt Schuber (Webster, N.Y.) was the first to score for the Raiders at 16:27 in the second half.  Schuber directed a header into the left corner of the net after getting the ball off a free kick by Chris Ross (Hurst, Texas).  With ten minutes remaining in the game, junior Alex Weekes (Stroudsburg, Pa.) got the insurance goal for the Raiders, off a cross from senior Jimmy Stephens (Naperville, Ill.).

Colgate goalkeeper David Cappuccio (Pittsford, N.Y.) had three saves in the shutout victory.  The win gives Cappuccio his 21st career shutout, breaking the Colgate record of 20 set by Keith Sipes from 1990-93.

Colgate, now 8-4-2 overall, outshot the Big Red 26-7 in the win.  Cornell’s Lesser had nine saves in the loss that drops the Big Red to 1-11 on the season.

The Raiders will begin a two-game road trip starting with Navy on Saturday, Oct. 25 before taking on the Duke Blue Devils on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
