HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/30/08) – Kyle Roemer (Martinez, CA) tallied 15 points and
Alex Woodhouse (Alexandria, VA) added 10 points and eight rebounds to lead Colgate to a 58-46 Patriot League win over Holy Cross Wednesday night at Cotterell Court.
Colgate (10-10, PL 2-4) snapped a four-game losing streak, while Holy Cross (10-9, PL 1-5) loses for the sixth time in its last seven games. The Raiders also snapped a seven-game losing streak against the Crusaders.
Freshman Mike Venezia (Westfield, NJ) added 10 points for the Raiders, while
Kendall Chones (Cleveland, OH) had six points and five rebounds. Tim Clifford was the leading scorer for Holy Cross with 11 points, while Greg McCarthy added eight points and six rebounds.
Holy Cross jumped out to an early seven-point lead, 10-3, with 12:28 remaining in the first half. Clifford scored six of the Crusaders’ first 10 points. Colgate rallied to tie the contest, 12-12, before taking its first lead, 14-12, on Woodhouse’s jumper with 8:24 left. The Crusaders went back in front by as many as three points, but the Raiders rallied to tie the contest for a fourth time, 21-21. After Colin Cunningham hit a free throw with 39 seconds left to put the Crusaders back in front, the Raiders held an one-point lead at halftime, 23-22, on Woodhouse’s dunk at the buzzer.
In the second half, Holy Cross held a five-point lead, 31-26, before Colgate put together a nine-point run to move in front 35-31 with 13:06 left. Roemer hit the first five points in the run to tie the contest, before Woodhouse scored on a layup and Roemer hit a jumper to put Colgate ahead for good. The Raiders sealed the victory in the closing minute when
Daniel Waddy (Tucson, AZ) made 5-of-6 free throws and hit a dunk for the final basket.
After shooting only 38 percent in the first half, Colgate blistered the nets for 65 percent in the second half on 13-of-20 shooting. Holy Cross finished with only 37 percent from the field, and 23 percent from 3-point range.
Colgate had a slight edge in the rebounding department, 32-30.
The Raiders will close out the first half of their Patriot League schedule on Saturday at Navy.
