LEWISBURG, Pa. (1/26/08)—Bucknell guard Kesha Champion scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Bison to a 65-36 victory over Colgate in Patriot League women’s basketball action in Sojka Pavilion this afternoon. Freshman
Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.) led the Raiders with 10 points.
Rookie
Georgia Gier (Mercer Island, Wash.) added six points, a game-high 10 rebounds, and three blocked shots for Colgate (1-19, 0-5 PL).
Krista Moser (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) had a seven-point and nine-rebound effort.
Bucknell jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first four minutes before the Raiders stopped the streak with a basket from Gier at the 15:06 mark. The Bison continued to stifle the Raider offense, going on an 18-1 run over the next eight minutes for a 25-23 lead.
The Raiders went on a short 8-5 run to cut the Bucknell advantage to 19 points, 30-11, but the Bison never let them get any closer. Bucknell shot a stellar 83.3 percent from long range and 48.3 percent overall from the floor for a 36-16 lead at the break.
Bucknell’s defense kept the Raiders off the scoreboard by holding Colgate to just 16.1 percent shooting from the field in the opening 20 minutes.
The Raiders got into a better offensive rhythm in the second frame and cut the lead to 17 points twice. Bucknell always seemed to have an answer to a Raider score and never led Colgate get any closer than 17. The Bison led by two points, 50-32, with just over nine minutes left and closed out the game with a 15-6 run for the 65-36 victory.
Kesha Champion led all scorers with 16 points and handed out four assists. Hope Foster added 12 points, five rebounds, and five assists, and three blocked shots to the win, while Jessica Lynch had 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from long range.
Colgate shot 25.5 percent for the game, including 37.5 percent in the second half. Bucknell finished the game at 46.4 percent from the floor and a stellar 63.6 percent from long range. The Raiders won the battle of the boards, 41-37, including grabbing 17 offensive rebounds to the Bison’s 9.
The Raiders remain on the road for their next Patriot League contest on Jan. 30 at Holy Cross. Tipoff with the Crusaders is set for 7 p.m.
