HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/19/08) - Colgate got goals from four different players as the men's hockey team rolled to a 4-1 win over visiting St. Lawrence on Saturday, Jan. 19, at Starr Rink. The victory gives the Raiders (9-9-4, 3-4-3 ECAC Hockey) three points in the league standings on the weekend, while the Saints (9-11-3, 4-6-2 ECAC Hockey) leave Central New York without a point after also losing to Cornell.
St. Lawrence got on the board first with a goal just as the first Raider penalty expired, 4:35 into the game. Jared Ross sent a slapshot in from the right point to the net through traffic. Colgate senior goaltender
Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.) thought he had made the save, but the puck trickled between his legs to sit just in front of the goal line. Aaron Bogosian saw the opportunity, and tapped it in to put his team up 1-0.
The Raiders responded less than five minutes later. Freshman
Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) carried the puck across the top of the left circle and shot on net. SLU sophomore goalie Kain Tisi made the save, but the rebound dropped in front. Sophomore
David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) picked up the loose rubber, faked a shot to put Tisi and a defender off balance, then beat the netminder five-hole to tie the game at 1-1.
Colgate earned the go-ahead goal late in the second period. Just as he stepped out of the box after serving a penalty for cross-checking, McIntyre received a break-out pass on his offensive blue line. He carried the puck into the zone, waited while his teammates caught up, and shot from the top of the left circle as seniors
Tyler Burton (Langley, B.C.) and
Ben Camper (Rocky River, Ohio) were crashing the net. Camper picked up the rebound and shot, but Tisi made another save. The second rebound came to freshman
Kevin McNamara (Chestnut Hill, Mass.), who had been trailing the forwards, and he put the puck between Tisi's pads from just below the hashmarks.
The Raiders earned some breathing space with their third goal of the night early in the third period. McIntyre chipped a pass ahead to Day, who skated in with the puck and shot on net. Tisi made the save, but the rebound came to Burton, who crashed the net and scored for his 12th goal of the season.
Senior captain
Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.) capped the game's scoring with his second goal of the weekend, and his 101st career point. St. Lawrence was on the power play and trying to break out of its own end, but Winchester was pressuring the forecheck. The Saint player with the puck misfired a pass directly onto Winchester's stick, and he one-timed a shot top-shelf, stick-side, from the right dot.
Dekanich limited the opposition to just one goal or less for the third game in a row, and earned the win after making 26 saves. Tisi finished with 33 stops for the Saints, including 12 in each of the last two periods as Colgate outshot SLU 37-27.
Colgate also won the battle in the faceoff circle, 34-25. For the second night in a row, Camper went unbeaten on draws, winning all four that he attempted to finish 13-for-13 on the weekend.
The Raiders are back at Starr Rink next weekend for games against Yale and Brown, Jan. 25-26. Both games begin at 7:00 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets to the games by calling the Colgate Ticket Office at (315) 228-7600.
