Women's Basketball Falls to Army in Patriot League Opener

WEST POINT, N.Y. (1/12/08)—Cara Enright and Alex McGuire both registered a game-high 16 points to lead Army past Colgate, 65-40, in the teams’ Patriot League women’s basketball opener in Christl Arena. Freshman Georgia Gier (Mercer Island, Wash.) led the Raiders with 11 points.
 
Rookie guard Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.) added 10 points and five rebounds, while senior Caitlin Gillard (Vestal, N.Y.) had seven points team-high six boards. Sophomore Katie Garman (Poplar Grove, Ill.) also finished with seven points. Krista Moser (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) led the team on the glass with seven caroms.
 
Colgate (1-15, 0-1 PL) got the opening bucket and forced an Army turnover on its first possession, but the Black Knights tied the game on a pair of free throws to spark a 15-3 run over the next seven minutes. The Raiders chipped into the lead with five straight points to make it a six-point game, 15-9, with 8:15 left to play in the first half. Army (10-6, 1-0 PL) build their lead to 13 points, 27-14, over the next four minutes and took a 33-20 advantage into the break.
 
The Raiders scored the first basket of the second half and held the Black Knights without a point for their first four possessions. Enright got Army on the board with a three-pointer as the Black Knights started to pull away. The Army defense held the Raiders to just three points over the next eight minutes to push its lead to 20 points, 45-25 with 10:26 left on the clock.
 
Colgate pulled within 17 points with a pair of free throws from Gier, but could not get any closer as the Raiders dropped their Patriot League opener. Colgate shot 28.9 percent for the game and 25 percent from long range.
 
Army got 11 points from Stefanie Stone, while Enright pulled down a game-high seven rebounds and handed out three assists. The Black Knights hit 42.6 percent of their shots from the field and 27.8 percent from behind the arc. Army held a slight 37-34 lead on the glass and got 27 points off of turnovers.
 
The Raiders close out their five-game road swing on Jan. 16 at Lafayette. The Leopards lost to Holy Cross 77-70 in their opener.
