HAMILTON, N.Y. (9/7/07) – Freshman
Steven Miller (Ivyland, Pa.) scored in the 52nd minute to lift the Colgate University men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over Richmond University on Friday, September 7 at the Raiders Adidas Fall Classic.
Miller intercepted the ball in the midfield and sent the ball to sophomore
Alex Weekes (Stroudsburg, Pa.), who was just inside the Raider offensive end. Weekes sprinted up the center of the field with Miller racing along his right side. Weekes crossed the ball back over to Miller who blasted a shot into the left corner past goalkeeper Eric Sciocchetti.
Sophomore
Chris Ross (Hurst, Texas) nearly got Colgate on the scoreboard 10 minutes into the game when the Raiders earned a free kick. Ross sent a great ball into the attacking zone where it clipped a teammate in the arm before going in on the far post. The officials called the goal off due to the hand ball.
Sam Pugley had the Spiders first solid chance on net roughly 11 minutes later, but Colgate’s goalkeeper
David Cappuccio (Pittsford, N.Y.) knocked the ball up and over the goal post to keep Richmond off the scoreboard.
Richmond had another chance to put the ball away, off a Callum Thomas corner kick. Jordan Evans took a shot at close range that was saved off the line by Colgate’s
Jimmy Stephens (Naperville, Ill.).
Both teams had plenty of scoring chances in the second half, with Richmond taking nine shots and Colgate coming up with six. The Raiders accuracy was on point, putting double the amount of shots on net than the Spiders.
Junior
Matt Leach (New Canaan, Conn.) attempted a bicycle kick inside the box, and a
William Batson (Augusta, Ga.) corner kick led to two Raider chances by Leach and
Dan Belke (West Bloomfield, Mich.).
Richmond had a slight 14-13 advantage in shots, while Colgate took an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
Cappuccio made four stops in his and Colgate's first win of the season, and Sciocchetti made six saves.
Colgate (1-2) will face Albany on Sunday, September 9, at 2:30 p.m., in the second day of the Classic. Earlier tonight, Cornell defeated Albany 2-1 in double overtime.
