Costello Lifts Colgate to 1-0 Victory Over Vermont

Adam Costello scored his first collegiate goal against Vermont.

HAMILTON, N.Y. (9/25/07) – Freshman Adam Costello's (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) first collegiate goal was all the Colgate University men’s soccer team needed to defeat the University of Vermont, 1-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at Van Doren Field.

Senior Mike Parshley (Lexington, Mass.) had the ball on the left flank and sent a cross into the box where two Raider strikers were positioned. Costello was able to get a head on the ball and knock it towards the goal, where it hit the far post and ricocheted in at 34:59.

Another great Colgate opportunity came with 5:30 remaining in the first half, when Alex Gardner (Louisville, Ky.) tried to head in an Eric Anton (Tacoma, Wash.) pass, but goalkeeper Roger Scully was able to stop it and tip it up over the crossbar.

Just over four minutes into the second half junior goalkeeper Matt Barton (San Mateo, Calif.) came in on relief for David Cappuccio (Pittsford, N.Y.). It was Barton’s first game of the season.

Colgate’s best chance of the second half came with four minutes remaining when Anton almost headed in a Parshley ball but it went just wide of the net of the far post.

Vermont picked up the pace in the final few minutes of the game trying to tally the equalizer. A free kick 30 yards out, with two minutes remaining, turned into a wasted chance as the ball arced too far wide right of any attacking players. The Catamounts put one on net with 30 seconds remaining, but Barton was easily able to make the grab.

Vermont outshot Colgate, 18-10, but only six shots made it in on net, as most sailed wide of the net. The Catamounts also had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

Cappuccio and Barton each made three saves while Scully turned away four for the Catamounts.

Colgate (4-3-1) travels to Holy Cross on Saturday, Sept. 29 for a 7 p.m., game to open the Patriot League slate. Both teams are currently ranked No. 8 in the NSCAA/adidas regional poll.
