Colgate Blanks West Chester, 2-0, in Field Hockey

Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Pedersen earned her third career shutout in the Raiders' 2-0 win over West Chester.

WEST CHESTER, PA. (9/22/07)- Colgate sophomore goal keeper Sarah Pedersen (State College, Pa.) earned her third career shut out in the Raiders’ 2-0 win over West Chester on Saturday, Sept. 22. Colgate (5-4) scored twice in the first period, and was able to keep West Chester (3-5) from finding the back of the net.

Colgate’s first goal came just 2:56 into the game when Lauren Remkus (Miller Place, N.Y.) assisted junior Amanda Gilmore (Chalfont, Pa.) in netting her first goal of the season.

At 28:35 the Raiders struck again when freshman Laura Denenga (Harare, Zimbabwe) assisted on junior Lauren Carey’s (Medfield, Mass.) fifth goal of the season.

Carey was an asset on defense as well. Twice during the game, she knocked down a shot off a penalty corner that was lifted over Pedersen.

The Golden Rams held the edge on the scoresheets, outshooting the Raiders 17-7 and holding the advantage in penalty corners 13-4.

West Chester’s Joelle Zarefoss made 3 saves for the day, while Pedersen came up with 11 big saves in the shutout. Pedersen needs just one more shutout this season to earn a spot in the Colgate record books.

The Raiders continue their five game road swing tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 23, at Princeton. The Tigers are 3-2 this season, and they lead the all-time series against Colgate 1-0. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
