EVANSTON, Ill. (9/2/07) – Marcus McCarty scored on a free kick in the 99th minute to give Northern Illinois a 2-1 overtime win over Colgate on Sunday, Sept. 2, in the second day of the Northwestern Lakeside Classic.
Colgate suffered one too many infractions during the game, beginning with a red card to top scoring threat Eric Anton (Tacoma, Wash.) in the 26th minute. Playing a man down, the Raiders had to step up their game. The defense was solid letting just three of the Huskies’ 16 shots go on net.
A Raider foul in the 99th minute, set up a free kick, 20 yards out, for Northern Illinois. With junior goalkeeper David Cappuccio (Pittsford, N.Y.) inching towards the far post, McCarty took the ball near post and caught him off guard for the golden goal.
Colgate got on the board first with a goal from junior Jimmy Stephens (Naperville, Ill.). Freshman Steven Miller (Ivyland, Pa.) sent a through ball ahead to Stephens who lofted a shot from the top of the box to the back of the netting.
Northern Illinois answered back just 43 seconds later when Brad Bahr used a corner kick to find Chris Rufa for a diving header.
The Huskies had a slight edge in corner kicks, 6-5, and a 16-7 advantage in shots. Cappuccio finished the night with one save and Northern Illinois’ Joe Zimka did not make a save, allowing Colgate’s lone shot on net pass the goal line.
Colgate (0-2) hosts the Raiders Adidas Fall Classic on Sept. 7 and 9. Colgate takes on Richmond on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and Albany on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
