Cornell Tops Colgate, 2-1 in Men's Soccer

Senior Eric Anton scored on a penalty kick, as the Raiders fell 2-1 to the Big Red.

ITHACA, N.Y. (9/19/07) – The Cornell University men’s soccer team scored two second-half goals en route to a 2-1 decision over Colgate University on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at Berman Field.

The Big Red outshot the Raiders 12-4 in the first half, although the Colgate defense threatened and only three shots made it to junior keeper David Cappuccio (Pittsford, N.Y.), who snagged the trio to keep the slate clean.

In the second half, the Colgate offense gained momentum and put together 10 shots to Cornell’s eight, but it was the Big Red who struck first.

Matt Bouraee scored an unassisted tally in the 49th minute to light the scoreboard for Cornell. He released a low bouncing shot that skipped off the slick turf and past a diving Cappuccio and into the right side of the net.

With over eight minutes remaining in regulation, Brian Kuritzky made it 2-0 Cornell when he knocked in a Brett Sumpio rebound. Sumpio’s shot from close range was batted away by Cappuccio but sent back out into play where Kurtizky was able to get the second touch and send it into the upper 90.

Senior Eric Anton (Tacoma, Wash.) cut the lead back to one when he connected on a penalty kick in the 86th minute after a Raider was tripped up inside the box. Anton sent the shot to the right of Cornell keeper Luca Cerretani for the score.

Cornell outshot Colgate, 20-14, and took eight corner kick’s to the Raiders’ two.

Cerretani made three stops for Cornell, which earned its first win over Colgate since 2003, and Cappuccio corralled five for Colgate.

The Raiders (3-3) host New Hampshire on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 2 p.m., on Colgate Men’s Soccer Alumni Day.
