Men's Soccer Takes One from the Tigers, 1-0

Junior forward Matt Leach scored with just five minutes remaining in regulation.

PRINCETON, N.J. (9/14/07) – With 5:13 left on the clock, junior forward Matt Leach (New Canaan, Conn.) scored an unassisted goal to lead Colgate University men’s soccer to a 1-0 win over Princeton University on Friday, Sept. 14 at Powers Field.

Leach gained possession 30 yards out from the Princeton goal after stealing the ball away from a Tiger defender and went one-on-one with goalkeeper Joe Walter. Leach snuck in a low shot that whipped past Walter for the score.

The Tigers pressured in the final minute and drew a Colgate foul with 30 seconds left, but a free kick from just outside the box went over the crossbar and time ran out on the Raiders' restart.

Princeton outshot Colgate 15-5, and had 11 corner kicks to the Raiders’ two.

Colgate goalkeeper David Cappuccio (Pittsford, N.Y.) had five saves to earn the shutout, including a diving effort about 10 minutes into the game. He also punched away a couple of Princeton’s chances off of corner kicks in the first half. Walter finished the night with two stops.

The Tigers and Raiders were meeting in men's soccer for the first time. Colgate won its third straight game, two of which have come by 1-0 scores.

Colgate (3-2) will take on another Ivy League team on Wednesday, Sept. 19 when they head to Cornell for a 7 p.m. game.
