WHITNEY POINT, N.Y. (5/7/07) – The Colgate University men’s rowing team raced in three events at the New York State Collegiate Rowing Championship on May 5-6 at Whitney Point, N.Y.
The Raiders finished fourth in the Varsity 8, second in the Second Varsity 8 and first in the Novice 4.
Colgate finished first in heat 1 of the Varsity 8 with a time of 6:11.0, over three seconds faster than second place Army at 6:13.4. Ithaca, Rochester, Union and Rensselaer followed. Despite shaving off six seconds, Colgate took fourth place in the grand final with a time of 6:05.4, finishing ahead of Ithaca and RIT. Marist won the event with a time of 5:56.9, followed by Hobart at 5:58.7 and Army at 6:01.7.
The Raiders clocked in at 6:11.7 to take second place in the grand final of the Second Varsity 8. Colgate was just :1.7 seconds behind first place Marist, but beat out third place Ithaca by :8.53 seconds. Rounding out the final four were RIT, Army, St. Lawrence and Union.
Colgate raced a Novice 4 boat for the first time this spring and showed tremendous promise with a first-place finish. The Raiders improved on their time from heat 1, in which they came in at 7:18.8, to cross the line at 7:12.6 in the grand final. St. Lawrence finished in second place with a time of 7:13.8, followed by Clarkson in third place with a time of 7:32.6. Iona, Buffalo and Vassar rounded out the six.
Colgate will return to Whitney Point next weekend, May 12-13, to compete at the 15th annual ECAC National Invitational Rowing Championships, formerly known as the Champion Regatta.
