Nordstrom Throws No-Hitter As Colgate Sweeps Binghamton

Kelsey Nordstrom pitches her first career no-hitter.

HAMILTON, N.Y. (5/3/07) – Senior right-hander Kelsey Nordstrom (Salina, KS) fired a five-inning no-hitter in the opener to lead Colgate to a non-conference doubleheader sweep over Binghamton Thursday at the Eaton Street Field.

Colgate (19-22) won the opener 8-0, before tagging the Bearcats (7-31) with a 2-0 shutout in the nightcap.

Nordstrom (11-7) pitched her first collegiate no-hitter on senior day for her career best 11th win of the season.  She walked four and struck out seven for the 10th shutout of her career and fifth of the campaign.

Colgate opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning, when Kimberley Spinks (Bristow, VA) walked with the bases loaded, and the second run coming in on a Binghamton fielding error.

The Raiders upped their advantage to 4-0 in the third inning on a two-run homer over the right field fence by Spinks.  It was her third round-tripper of the season.

In the fourth inning, Colgate broke the contest open with four runs to move ahead 8-0.  Tiana Tyeskey (Granite Bay, CA) had a RBI double, followed by Calla Yee’s (Salinas, CA) two-run single and Ashley Rowe’s (Tampa, FL) RBI single.

Tyeskey was 2-for-3, while Rowe went 2-for-3 and Jessi Bentovoja (El Dorado Hills, CA) 2-for-2.

Freshman Jesse McCarrick (Oak Hill, VA) pitched a three-hitter in the nightcap for her first collegiate shutout.  She walked two and struck out a career-high six batters.

With two outs in the third inning, Colgate’s Vicky Ortengren (Colorado Springs, CO) hit a line drive homer over the right field fence for a 1-0 lead.  The Raiders added an insurance run in the sixth inning, when Rowe scored on a wild pitch.

Catcher Erin Gomez (Lawrenceville, NJ) was 2-for-3 including her sixth double of the season, while Ortengren, Rowe and Whitney Scott (Beaverton, OR) had one hit apiece.

Colgate will play host to Bucknell in a four-game series this weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday and Sunday.
