Raiders Reach Grand Final as Winds Force the ECAC Nationals to Cancellation

The Varsity 8 was in the top six of 24 boats that competed at ECAC Nationals.
WHITNEY POINT, N.Y. (5/13/07) – The Colgate University men’s rowing team advanced to the grand final of the Varsity 8, but due to inclement weather the ECAC National Invitational Rowing Championship was cancelled on Sunday morning.

The Raiders were off to a great start on Saturday, as they finished second in heat 1 of the Varsity 8 race with a time of 5:59.781, just one second behind Michigan. The crew finished in front of UC-Davis, Coast Guard, Texas and Tufts to advance to semifinal 1 on Sunday morning.

Colgate shaved over a second off of their time on Sunday morning in the semifinals to take third with a time of 5:58.588. Trinity and Virginia came in first and second with times of 5:52.687 and 5:56.716, respectively. Behind Colgate were Wesleyan, UMass and Williams. The Raiders’ time would advance them to the grand final which was set to take place at 11:40 a.m.

With the weather taking a turn for the worse, with increasing winds, all races after 9:30 a.m., were cancelled, which included the grand final of the Varsity 8 as well as all Second Varsity 8 events which Colgate was scheduled to compete.

Colgate will head back to the waters on May 31-June 2 for the IRA Regatta in Camden, N.J.
