CAMDEN, N.J. (4/16/07) – The Colgate University men’s rowing team had an excellent weekend at the Knecht Cup, raced on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.  Due to the weather, the racing schedule was edited so all races took place on Saturday, April 14.

 

All of the Colgate boats that were entered qualified for the Grand Finals, and no boat finished lower than fourth.

 

The Raiders earned the gold medal in the Men’s Second Varsity 4, and the silver medal in the Men’s Varsity 4.  The First and Second Men’s Varsity 8’s both came in fourth.

 

The Men’s Second Varsity 4 had a first-place time of 7:12.9, a good 16 seconds ahead of second-place Lehigh at 7:28.0.  LaSalle and Vassar came in third and fourth with times of 8:06.4 and 8:29.0, respectively.  Earning the gold medal were Tara Desai (cox), Antonio Perez, Parker Paulin, Marc Cassone and Peter Leahey.

 

The Men’s First Varsity 4 finished first in Heat 1 with a time of 7:13.1.  A total of eight boats raced in two heats with the top six boats advancing to the Grand Finals.  Dowling’s A boat got revenge for last weekend’s dual with Colgate, in which they came in second, and beat the Raiders with a time of 6:47.7.  Colgate came in second with a time of 6:53.6.  Earning the silver medal were Chris Monterosso, Brad Ernst, Matt Rogowski, Will Fox and Isaac Goodling.

 

The Second Varsity 8 crossed the line at 6:30.4 for fourth place.  Holy Cross took top honors with a time of 6:14.0, with Temple finishing 0.5 seconds later.  Marist took third with a time of 6:20.5.  Coming in after the Colgate were Hobart and Maryland at 6:42.0 and 6:57.5, respectively.  Making up the boat were Brenna O’Rourke, Brad Ernst, Matt Rogowski, Mark Robson, Isaac Goodling, Will Fox, Oliver Jensen, Matt Green and Peter Leahey.

 

The Men’s Varsity 8 race was comprised of 15 boats.  Broken up into three heats, the Raiders finished second in Heat 1 at 6:02.8.  The finish qualified Colgate for the Grand Final.  The crew lost the bronze medal to Holy Cross by 4/10 of a second with Temple and Marist placing first and second.  In the boat were Mary Dekar, Peter Engebretson, Andrew Hatzenbuhler, Bryan Pape, Eddie Gastel, Doug Herling, Tom Leonard, Kurt Miller and Austin Sigety.

 

Colgate hosts Hobart on Saturday, April 21 in the annual Seneca Cup.  The race will take place on Lake Moraine, and will be followed by a boat dedication for Colgate’s new Varsity 8 boat.
