Kelsey Nordstrom (Salina, KS) threw a two-hit shutout in the opener to lead the Colgate softball team (16-17 overall, 8-0 Patriot League) to a sweep of its doubleheader against Army Saturday at the Army Softball Complex. The Raiders won the opener 2-0 before taking a 9-1 five inning mercy-rule win in the nightcap.
Colgate swept its four-game series with the Cadets for the first time since the 1998 season. The Raiders are in first place in the Patriot League standings with an 8-0 mark.
In the opener, Nordstrom (9-5) allowed two hits while striking out four and walking one for her ninth career shutout. She has thrown 11 straight scoreless innings.
Colgate took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when third baseman
Whitney Scott (Beaverton, OR) blasted her fourth career home run over the left field fence. It was the 100
th hit of her career.
In the third inning, the Raiders upped their lead to 2-0.
Calla Yee (Salinas, CA) reached on a bunt single, and after stealing second, moved to third on a wild pitch. She came home when freshman first baseman
Jessica Sabo (Hudson Falls, NY) hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
In the nightcap, Army jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Chris Stauffer tagged a homer over the center field fence off Colgate
starter Jesse McCarrick (Oak Hill, VA).
The Cadets lead was short with the Raiders scoring five runs in the fourth inning.
Erin Gomez (Lawrenceville, NJ) had a two-run double, while Sabo had a two-run single and Yee drove in one run with a bases loaded single.
Colgate scored four more in the fifth inning on a two-run single by pinch hitter
Melissa Babb-Renta (Glenview, IL) and RBI singles by Ortengren and Gomez.
McCarrick (4-6) worked the first three innings allowing one run on four hits, while striking out one and walking one.
Amanda Eccleston (Roseville, CA) pitched the final two frames allowing no base runners.
Gomez was 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Sabo finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and
LaPorscha Albert (Lewisville, TX) was 2-for-3 with a double. Albert’s double moved her into sixth place in career doubles with 30.
