HAMILTON, N.Y. (3/31/2007)—Colgate University sophomore
Brandon Corp (Chittenango, N.Y.) scored a game-high four goals and had five points to lead the Raiders to a 9-7 victory over ninth-ranked Army in Patriot League men’s lacrosse action this afternoon at Tyler’s Field. The Raiders outscored the Black Knights 4-1 in the fourth quarter, including 3-0 in the final seven minutes, to earn the two-goal victory.
Colgate stops a three-game skid to improve to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in Patriot League play. This is Army’s second consecutive loss as it drops to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in conference action. Nine also is the most goals the Black Knights have given up all season as they came into the game leading the nation in scoring defense.
Junior
Matt Lalli (Princeton Junction, N.J.) added two goals and an assist for Colgate, while three other players tallied one goal. Seven different players scored for the Black Knights with Justin Bokmeyer being the lone multiple-point scorer with three points.
The game was a tight affair throughout the entire 60 minutes as there were four lead changes and five ties. Neither team led by more than two goals in the contest.
Lalli got things started just 2:30 into the first quarter with a man-up goal over the right shoulder of Army goaltender Adam Fullerton. Kevin LoRusso tied the score for Army seven minutes later with a shot high to the near post.
The Raiders and Black Knights traded goals to start the second quarter before Colgate scored a pair to go in front 4-3 at the halftime break. Sophomore
Nick Monastero (Bohemia, N.Y.) rifled a shot just inside the top of the box on a second man-up opportunity to give Colgate that halftime lead.
Corp made it a 5-3 game just 1:38 into the third quarter with an assist from Lalli. The Black Knights answered just 48 seconds later to pull within one and added two more to head into the thrilling fourth quarter ahead, 6-5.
It was Corp again to kick off the fourth quarter for the Raiders as he faked high and sent an underhand shot into the lower right corner of the net. Army went ahead again at the 9:31 mark with a goal from Zach Jansen, but that would be it for the Black Knights as the Raider defense put the clamps on Army’s offense.
Lalli dodged his defender to the left side of the crease and beat Fullerton to start Colgate’s three-goal run with 7:38 left to play. Freshman goaltender
Tim Harrington (Lutherville, Md.) saved the next Army shot and cleared the ball. The Raiders called a timeout to set up a play with 5:53 on the clock. Coming out of the break, Corp got the ball and curled around the back of the goal and fired home a shot for his fourth goal of the game and an 8-7 Colgate lead.
Leading by one, Colgate frustrated the Army offense. The Black Knights struggled to get good look at the goal as the Raiders backed up an errant Army shot with just over four minutes left. Colgate successfully cleared and burned nearly three minutes before calling a timeout with 1:41 left to play.
The Raiders mirrored their last goal as Army sent Fullerton out of the goal to double-team. Sophomore
Will Planer (Rumson, N.J.) got the ball and raced to the empty net to seal the victory for the Raiders.
Colgate had a slight 31-30 edge in shots and won the groundball battle 22-15. The Raiders also went 12-20 at the faceoff “X” and were 3-of-4 on the extra man.
In goal, Harrington made eight saves, while Fullerton had just three.
Colgate returns to action on April 7 at Patriot League foe Lehigh. The game is set for 1 p.m.
