HAMILTON, N.Y. (3/31/07) – The Colgate women’s lacrosse team scored 12 second-half goals to erase a 4-1 halftime deficit and beat Bucknell, 13-9, on Saturday, Mar. 31, at Tyler’s Field. The win was the first for the Raiders in Patriot League play this season, and improves their overall mark to 3-8, while the Bison fall to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
Colgate’s comeback was thanks to an all-around team effort: eight Raiders found the back of the net during the game, and nine recorded at least one point. Junior
Lindsay Pittard (Skaneateles, N.Y.) led the way with three goals and one assist, while freshman
Meghan Lawler (Liverpool, N.Y.) added two goals and a helper. Senior
Tara Casey (Syracuse, N.Y.) and sophomore
Molly Carroll (Swarthmore, Pa.) each chipped in two goals, and junior
Jessica Van der Meulen (Liverpool, N.Y.) posted three assists.
Bucknell was led by Chelsea Peters, who had three goals, and Carol Donohue, who had two goals and an assist. Bonnie Buechel tied the game high with three helpers, and Sarah Collins set up two goals.
Carroll scored the first goal of the game 6:48 into the opening half, but Bucknell got the rest of the offense of the period to take a 4-1 lead into halftime. The Bison defense kept the Raiders on the perimeter during each of CU’s possessions to hold the home team to one goal in the first 30 minutes.
But Colgate would not be denied in the second half. Freshman
Katie Holland (San Diego, Calif.) and Casey scored back-to-back goals within the first 82 seconds to cut Bucknell’s lead to one, 4-3. The Bison snuck in a goal before sophomores
Sarah Kellogg (White Plains, N.Y.) and
Ashley Didio (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored less than two minutes apart to knot the score at 5-5.
Bucknell took its last lead of the game 9:43 into the second half, but Colgate rattled off five straight goals, including three in a row for Pittard, to take a 10-6 lead. Donohue scored her first goal of the game at the 16:21 mark, but the Raiders responded with goals from senior
Kate Metevia (Delmar, N.Y.) and Lawler to take their biggest lead of the afternoon, 12-7.
The Bison got back to within striking distance with 2:35 on the clock after scoring two goals to make it 12-9, but Casey capped the game’s scoring with a goal with eight seconds to play.
Colgate sophomore goalkeeper
Sara Drexler (Pottstown, Pa.) earned the win after making nine saves, while Bucknell’s Katie Hartsock made 11 saves as her team was outshot 41-26. The Raiders picked up 13 groundballs to Bucknell’s eight, and won 14 of the 14 draw controls.
Colgate returns to action when it hosts Albany on Tuesday, April 3, at 7:00 p.m., at Tyler’s Field.
