ANNAPOLIS, Md. (3/21/2007)—Fourth-ranked Navy jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back as it upended Patriot League rival Colgate, 15-10, in men’s lacrosse action this evening. William Wallace and Basil Daratsos both had four goals for the Midshipmen, while sophomore
Kevin Colleluori (Bethpage, N.Y.) had a game-high five goals for the Raiders.
The Raiders (4-3, 1-1 PL) got a goal and two assists from sophomore
Brandon Corp (Chittenango, N.Y.), senior
Brendan Hurley (West Islip, N.Y.), and junior
Matt Lalli (Princeton Junction, N.J.). Ian Dingman had three goals and an assist for Navy, while Billy Looney added three helpers and one goal.
Navy (7-0, 4-0 PL) jumped all over the Raiders in the opening minutes of the first quarter. Daratsos took the first possession and fired a shot from the left side of the cage into the right upper ninety just 24 seconds into the game.
Navy got the ball back on a Colgate failed clear and Darsatos made it 2-0 with a low shot past Colgate goalie
Tim Harrington (Lutherville, Md.) at the 13:22 mark. Bruce Nechanicky made it 3-0 one minute later with an unassisted tally.
The Raiders got the ball into their offensive end and drew a pair of Navy penalties. The Mids’ man-down defense held strong as goaltender Colin Finnegan made two point-blank stops to keep Colgate off the scoreboard.
Navy added two more goals six seconds apart for a 5-0 lead after the first quarter.
The Raiders came out of the break looking to make a run of their own. William Wallace put the Mids in front 6-0 with his second tally of the game. Colgate junior Josh Back (Guilderland, N.Y.) stopped the run two minutes later when he curled around the right side of the crease and sent a shot into the lower left corner of the net.
Sophomore
Nick Monastero (Bohemia, N.Y.) added another Colgate score 57 seconds later with an assist from senior
Jeff Hiller (Wantagh, N.Y.) to make it a 6-2 game. Colleluori made it a three-game score two minutes later after taking a pass from Lalli on the left side and rifling it past Finnegan.
Lalli nearly made it a two-goal game at the 6:11 mark, but his shot hit the pipe and Navy picked up the groundball. The Mids took the ball down and got a score from Ian Dingman to make it a 7-3 game at the 5:02 mark. Wallace and Billy Looney hooked up 1:25 later with a man-up goal to go in front by five again, 8-3.
Corp fired a pass from behind the cage to Hurley who whipped the ball into the back of the net.
That would be as close as the Raiders could get as Navy scored four unanswered to start the third quarter and headed into the final period with a 13-6 advantage.
The Raiders scored three of the first four goals in the fourth session, but it was too little too late as they dropped the 15-10 decision to the No. 4 Midshipmen.
Navy outshot the Raiders 54-34 for the game and edged the Colgate in groundballs 39-34. The Raiders won 15 faceoffs, while the Mids captured 14 for the game.
In goal, Harrington played the majority of the game, making a career-high 13 saves. Sophomore
Brian Cain (Rocky Point, N.Y.) made two stops in 16:25 of action. Finnegan made 12 saves for the Midshipmen.
The Raiders return to action on March 27, traveling to take on No. 2 Albany at 3:30 p.m.
