Daniels' Late Basket Lifts Colgate Over Army 42-38

Marc Daniels has six points and nine rebounds for the Raiders.

WEST POINT, N.Y. (2/3/07) – Senior Marc Daniels (Aurora, IL) scored with 25 seconds left to lift Colgate to a 42-38 win over Army Saturday in a Patriot League game at Christl Arena.

Colgate (8-14 overall, 3-6 Patriot League) wins its sixth straight over the Cadets, who fall to 13-10 overall and 3-5 in the league.  The Raiders have won nine straight against the league’s military academies.

Kyle Chones (Cleveland, OH) was Colgate’s leading scorer with 11 points, while Jon Simon (Phoenix, AZ) tallied seven.  Daniels finished with six points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Daniel Waddy (Tucson, AZ) scored six points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists.

Army’s Matt Bell led the Cadets with 10 points, while Jarell Brown added seven points and Josh Miller six.

After Army had rallied to tie the contest 38-38 with 1:03 left, Colgate’s Simon missed a baseline jumper, but Daniels grabbed the rebound and put in the winning basket.  After Bell missed a jumper for the Cadets, Waddy grabbed the rebound and was immediately fouled.  The junior guard made both ends of two free throws to seal the victory.

Both teams had a poor shooting performance with the Raiders shooting 30 percent from the field, while the Cadets managed only 27 percent.  Colgate, however, made seven 3-pointers and was 9-of-12 from the charity stripe.  The Cadets were only 6-of-15 from the foul line.

The contest started slowly with Colgate making 1-of-11 from the field, while Army was only 2-of-13.  With Colgate leading 3-2, the Cadets scored seven straight points for a 9-3 lead with 7:48 remaining in the first half.

Colgate came back to tie the contest at 14 when Willie Morse (State College, PA) drilled a 3-pointer.  After falling behind again when Brown made a pair of free throws for the Cadets, Colgate tallied six straight points for a four-point lead, 20-16, at halftime.  Daniels made an old-fashion three-point play, and Simon hit from behind the arc.

In the second half, Colgate extended its lead to seven points when Chones scored five straight points, 31-24.  The Raiders couldn’t increase their lead, while Army rallied to tie the contest, 34-34, on Bell’s free throw with 5:13 left.

Colgate quickly moved back in front on free throws by Waddy and Daniels, 38-34, but baskets by Bell and Brown tied the contest again.  That set the stage for Daniels game-winning basket.
