McGuire's 18 Points Lead Army Past Colgate, 65-48

Caitlin Gillard and Gretchen Polinski both had 13 points to lead the Raiders.

WEST POINT, N.Y. (2/3/2007)—Sophomore Alex McGuire scored a game-high 18 points to lead Army to a 65-48 victory over Colgate University in Patriot League women’s basketball action this afternoon at Christl Arena. Junior Caitlin Gillard (Vestal, N.Y.) and sophomore Gretchen Polinski (Mansfield, Ohio) had 13 points apiece to lead the Raiders.
 
Colgate falls to 3-20 overall and 2-6 in league action, while Army ups its record to 19-4 and 6-2 in conference play.
 
Junior Molly Patterson (Euclid, Ohio) added 11 points for Colgate, while freshman TaHara Williams (Mason, Ohio) had a game-high five rebounds and three assists. Army’s Cara Enright added 13 points and Megan Evans added eight. Enright and Courtney Wright both had five rebounds.
 
Army opened the contest with a 15-0 run, getting at least two points from four of its five starters in that stretch. Junior Molly Patterson (Euclid, Ohio) stopped the run with a three-pointer at the 14:11 mark, but the Black Knights wouldn’t let up as they built their advantage to as many as 19 points.
 
Trailing 33-14, Colgate outscored Army 12-5 in the final five minutes to cut the lead to 12 points, 38-26, at the break. Sophomore Gretchen Polinski (Mansfield, Ohio) had five points during that stretch.
 
The Black Knights were hitting on all cylinders in the opening frame as they shot 55.2 percent from the floor and held the Raiders to a 39.1 shooting percentage.
 
The second half proved to be much of the same for the Raiders as Colgate pulled within 11 points in the early minutes, but could not get any closer. Army was able to stretch its lead to as many as 23 points and cruised to the 17-point win.
 
The Raiders shot 34 percent for the game and just 25 percent from long range, while Army knocked down 46.2 percent of its shots, but just 11 percent from behind the arc. The Black Knights held a 34-25 advantage on the boards.
