HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/3/07) –
Clarkson junior goaltender David Leggio made 33 saves, including 14 in the third period to lift his No. 8/8 Golden Knights to a 2-1 win against Colgate on Saturday, Feb. 3, at Starr Rink. The victory gives Clarkson a 17-7-4 overall record this season and a 9-4-3 mark in ECACHL play, while Colgate drops to 12-14-4 overall and 6-7-3 in the league.

Raider freshman Ethan Cox (Richmond, B.C.) scored his second goal in as many nights to give Colgate an early 1-0 lead. Cox dumped the puck into the zone, and Leggio went behind the net to play it. Freshman David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) hustled toward the play, forcing Leggio to lose his composure as well as the puck, which came out in front to Cox and he banged it into the empty net.

Clarkson’s crisp passing on the power played allowed the Knights to even the score 2:21 later. Matt Beca started with the puck at the blue line, then sent it to Shea Guthrie in the corner. Guthrie found Mike Sullivan alone in front of the net where he beat Raider goalie Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.).

The teams battled back and forth for the next 27:06 before Clarkson’s Steve Zalewski scored what would stand up as the game-winner. Philippe Paquet rushed the puck into the Raiders’ zone, and shook his defender to get a shot on net. The rebound landed in the crease, where Zalewski knocked it into the cage.

Dekanich finished the game with 29 saves as his Raiders outshot Clarkson 34-31. Colgate was unable to capitalize on any of its four power-play opportunities, while the Golden Knights finished 1-for-5 with the man advantage. The Raiders dominated in the faceoff circle, 43-25.

Colgate visits the Capital District for another set of ECACHL games. The Raiders are at Rensselaer on Friday, Feb. 9, and continue to Union on Saturday. Both contests begin at 7:00 p.m.
