WASHINGTON, D.C. (2/28/07) – Andre Ingram tallied 16 points and Travis Lay hauled down a career-high 13 rebounds to lead American University to a 59-44 win over Colgate in quarterfinal round action in the 2007 Patriot League Tournament at Bender Arena.
Colgate finishes its season with a 10-19 record, while American (16-13) advances to play top-seeded Holy Cross in the semifinal round on Sunday in Worcester, Mass.
Junior
Kendall Chones (Cleveland, OH) was Colgate’s leading scorer with 00 points, while senior guard
Jon Simon (Phoenix, AZ) tallied nine, and senior center
Marc Daniels (Aurora, IL) and junior forward
Kyle Chones (Cleveland, OH) had six points apiece.
Other American players in double figures were Arvydas Eitutavicius with 15 and Paulius Joneliunas with 12.
The Eagles dominated on the glass out-rebounding Colgate, 41-23, including 11 offensive boards.
Kyle Chones was Colgate’s leading rebounder with six.
American shot 43.8 percent from the field, while Colgate managed only 30 percent, including just one of 15 from 3-point range.
In the first half, Colgate held an early 12-9 lead behind four points from Daniels and
Kendall Chones. American came back with five straight points for a 14-12 lead as Derrick Mercer tallied three points in the run. After Daniels tied the contest with a jumper, the Eagles strung together eight straight points for a 22-14 advantage, before Colgate scored six straight. Simon scored five straight and
Todd Checovich (North Hampton, NH) added a free throw. American made the final basket of the half for a 24-20 lead heading into the locker room
American started the second half with a six point run to extend its advantage over the Raiders to 10 points, 30-20. The Eagles were able to increase the lead to 14 points, 41-27, before Colgate went an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to eight points, 43-35. That would be as close as the Raiders came to the Eagles, who lead by as many as 18 points in the late stages of the contest.

th place on the school’s all-time scoring list …
