Men's Basketball Defeats Navy 70-62 In Regular Season Finale

Jon Simon hits the 20-point mark for the seventh time this season.
 
HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/24/07) – Playing in his final home game, senior guard Jon Simon (Phoenix, AZ) scored 24 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead Colgate to a 70-62 win over Navy at Cotterell Court Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale for both teams.
 
Colgate (10-18, PL 5-9) will be seeded fifth in the Patriot League Tournament and will play at American University on Wednesday, Feb. 28 in the quarterfinal round.  Navy is 14-15 overall and 4-10 in the league.  The Midshipmen will be seeded seventh in the tournament and play at number two Bucknell.
 
Colgate snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory, and posted its fifth straight win over Navy.
 
Other Colgate players in double figures were Kyle Chones (Cleveland, OH) with 14 and Kendall Chones (Cleveland, OH) with 10.  Navy was led by Greg Sprink with a game-high 29 points, while Kaleo Kina added 13 for the visitors.
 
After Navy took an early 3-0 lead, Colgate scored 11 straight points to open an eight-point advantage behind seven points from Kyle Chones.  Later in the first half with Colgate leading 20-18, the Raiders tallied 10 straight points to open their biggest lead of the game, 30-18, with 4:15 remaining.
 
Eight straight points by Sprink brought the Midshipmen back to within four points, 30-26, before Simon closed out the first half with a 3-pointer to give the Raiders a seven-point lead at halftime.
 
Colgate moved ahead by 12 points early in the second half, 42-30, before Navy scored seven straight points to trail, 42-37.  In the final two minutes, the Raiders had just a two-point advantage, 62-60, but Marc Daniels’ (Aurora, IL) dunk off a missed shot and two free throws by Dan Gentile (Midland Park, NJ) and Simon sealed the victory.
 
Colgate out-rebounded Navy 38-22 led by Daniels with eight caroms and Kyle Chones with seven.
