Senior Shevorne Martin had a career-high 22 points against St. Bonaventure.

HAMILTON, N.Y. (12/8/07)—Colgate University senior Shevorne Martin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led all scorers with a career-high 22 points, but it was not enough as the Raiders fell to St. Bonaventure 64-41 in non-conference women’s basketball action on Cotterell Court. Martin hit 9-of-12 from the floor and was 4-of-4 from the free throw line for the afternoon.

Colgate (1-8) got six points apiece from both senior Caitlin Gillard (Vestal, N.Y.) and freshman Georgia Gier (Mercer Island, Wash.), while Gier led the team on the glass with eight boards.

The Raiders jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opening three minutes and held the Bonnies to just six points midway through the opening 20 minutes. Colgate took an 11-8 lead with a jumper from Martin at the 8:26 mark before a three-pointer by Erica Schiefen tied the contest with a three-pointer 21 seconds later.

St. Bonaventure (7-2) started to hit its stride on both the offensive and defensive ends in those final eight minutes, outscoring Colgate 23-6. Tied at 11, the two squads traded baskets the next two possessions and sophomore Katie Garman (Poplar Grove, Ill.) got a layup to put the Raiders back in front at 15-14.  That is when the shots started falling for the Bonnies as they hit three of their five first-half threes to spark a 20-2 run in the final six minutes to put them in front 34-17 at the half.

Colgate had two long scoring droughts that hurt in the first session, going six minutes without a point in the early going and not registering a point in the final 4:49. The Raiders shots 34.8 percent (8-of-23) in the first half and St. Bonaventure was 43.8 percent (14-of-32) from the floor.

The Raiders came out of the break looking to chip away at the St. Bonaventure lead. Appearing on the verge of a run, the Bonnies always had an answer to Colgate’s baskets as they slowly built the lead to as many as 25 points. The Raiders shot 52.6 percent (10-of-19) in the second frame, while St. Bonaventure hit 42.3 percent (11-of-26) of its shots as it took away the 64-41 victory.

Dana Mitchell led the Bonnies with 20 points, while Katelyn Murray had 18. Tiara Johnson and Megan Ellis were St. Bonaventure’s leader on the glass with five rebounds apiece. Andrea Doneth finished with eight points and seven assists in the game.

Colgate shot 42.9 percent (18-of-42) for the game, while St. Bonaventure was 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field overall. The Bonnies held a slight advantage on the glass at 32-28, getting 15 second chance points to Colgate’s eight.

The Raiders will take an eight-day break for final exams before traveling to take on Binghamton on Dec. 16 at 2 p.m.
