VESTAL, N.Y. (12/16/07)—Erica Carter scored 14 points and had a game-high 12 rebounds to lead Binghamton University to a 74-26 victory over Colgate University in non-conference women’s basketball action at the Events Center. Freshman
Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.) led the Raiders with 10 points.
Colgate (1-9) got a team-high 10 rebounds from rookie forward
Georgia Gier (Mercer Island, Wash.), including a career-high seven offensive boards. Senior
Caitlin Gillard (Vestal, N.Y.) and freshman
Kendra Brim (Buffalo, N.Y.) both added fourth points apiece.
Koslowski put the Raiders in front 2-0 with a pair of technical free throws before the game started after Binghamton got hit with a bench technical before tipoff. The Bearcats (2-8) tied the game on the next possession with a pair of shots from the charity stripe from Laura Sario.
The two teams traded baskets over the next few possessions with the Bearcats holding a narrow 9-7 lead at the 16:09 mark. That’s when Binghamton started to take over, outscoring the Raiders 20-0 to take a 29-7 lead into the break.
The Bearcat defense stifled the Raiders’ offense in the final 16 minutes. Colgate shot 7.4 percent in the opening 20 minutes, hitting 2-of-27, while Binghamton got 42.3 percent of its shots to fall. The Bearcats were 11-of-26 in the first session for the halftime lead.
Colgate came out of the break and got better looks at the basket, but never seemed to get into an offensive rhythm. The Raiders improved their shooting to 26.9 percent in the second frame as the knocked down 7-of-26 from the floor, but the first-half deficit was too much to overcome as Binghamton cruised to its second victory of the season.
Binghamton was led on the offensive end by Sario’s 17 points and four assists. Laine Kurpniece added eight points and a game-high five assists, while Laura Franceski chipped in her own eight points and eight rebounds.
Colgate shot 17 percent (9-of-53) for the game, while Binghamton hit 46.4 percent (26-of-56) from the floor. The Bearcats dominated the boards, outrebounding Colgate 49-26 for the game.
The Raiders will get one day off before hitting the court again on Dec. 18 versus Cornell. Colgate hosts the Big Red at 7 p.m.
