PROVIDENCE, R.I. (11/9/07) – The Brown University men’s hockey team broke an 11-game winless streak against Colgate with a 5-2 victory on Friday, Nov. 9, at Meehan Auditorium. It marked the first time that the Bears (1-1-2, 1-0-2 ECAC Hockey) had defeated the Raiders (3-5-1, 0-2-1 ECAC Hockey) since the 2002-03 season.
Colgate controlled the flow of the game in the early going, generating several scoring chances, including two quality opportunities by sophomore
David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.). McIntyre’s persistence paid off at the 8:22 mark of the opening period. Freshman
Wade Poplawski (Winnipeg, Man.) wrestled control of the puck in the corner, and sent it toward the right point. His pass was deflected, but senior captain
Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.) got a stick on the puck to keep his Raiders onside. Winchester held the puck for a moment, then threw it toward the goal. McIntyre was camped out in the low slot, where he received the puck and then roofed it for his second goal of the season.
The Bears tied it up 4:30 later. Junior Ryan Garbutt gave the puck to senior Paul Baier, who skated with it into the zone on the right side. As he approached the circles, he curved toward center, and shot over the glove of Raider senior goaltender
Justin Kowalkoski (Young America, Minn.).
Each team added another goal in the second period. Brown struck first, going up 2-1 less than two minutes into the frame. Just seven seconds into the Bears’ first power play of the night, sophomore Devin Timberlake won a faceoff back to senior Dave Robertson at the right point. He crossed the puck to junior Sean Muncy, who worked it back to Timberlake. Timberlake powered into the zone on the right side, dodged two defenders, and beat Kowalkoski to give his team their first lead of the night.
Colgate responded midway through the period. Junior
Tom Riley (Ottawa, Ont.) held the puck behind the net, then found junior
Jason Fredricks (Eagle River, Wis.) at the right point. Fredricks shot on goal, and the puck was deflected by junior
Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.) from the right circle. It was Bogdanich’s first goal of the year, as he was playing in his first game of the season since returning from injury.
Brown re-took the lead 7:59 into the third period. Senior Jeff Prough took a pass from Robertson near the blue line, and attempted a shot, but it was blocked by a teammate. The rebound came to sophomore Aaron Volpatti at the top of the left circle, and he fired into the top right corner of the net.
The Bears added an insurance tally with 6:15 to play, as Robertson set up Muncy, giving Robertson his third assist of the night. Colgate had a chance to tie with a late power play, but hit the pipe twice. With Kowalkoski on the bench, the Raiders turned the puck over and allowed Garbutt to finish the game with an empty-net goal.
Kowalkoski completed his first start of the season with 37 saves, while Brown sophomore Dan Rosen earned the win after making 29 stops as his Bears outshot Colgate 42-31, including 17-7 in the third period. The Raiders were unable to capitalize on six power-play chances, while Brown was 1-for-4 with the extra man.
Colgate is back in action on Sunday, Nov. 11, when it takes on Yale starting at 4:00 p.m., in a game televised live on ESPNU.
