Men's Soccer Plays to a Scoreless Draw with American

Junior David Cappuccio earned his 15th career shutout.

WASHINGTON (11/4/07) – The Colgate University men’s soccer team played to a scoreless draw with American University in Patriot League action on Sunday, Nov. 4 at Reeves Field.

Regulation featured a lot of play in the midfield, with both teams attempting to get their offense going. Both teams’ defenses were solid at getting the ball out of danger and clearing passes and long balls.

American had the only chance of the first overtime session when Mike Worden fired a low shot from inside the box but Colgate goalkeeper David Cappuccio (Pittsford, N.Y.) collected the ball to keep the slate clean.

Two minutes later senior Eric Anton (Tacoma, Wash.) had arguably the best scoring opportunity of the game when he found a cross inside the 18 but the ball skimmed just wide right of the net.

The Raiders outshot the Eagles, 16-13 in the contest and had the edge in the overtime, taking six shots to American’s four. American took seven corner kicks, while Colgate had six.

Cappuccio made three saves in his 15th career shutout, while Chris Sedlak stopped six shots for American. Cappuccio has recorded seven shutouts this season, matching his total from the 2006 season, both of which rank third in the Colgate records book.

Colgate remains in first place in the league standings, but now shares the position with Holy Cross, which defeated Army 2-0 on Saturday. American and Lafayette share third place with 11 points, three behind the first-place teams.

All eight league teams will be in action on Saturday, Nov. 10. Colgate will play Lehigh on Saturday, Nov. 10 in Bethlehem, Pa., at 7 p.m., with hopes of winning the Patriot League regular-season title.
