HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/23/07) -
The Wayne State women's hockey team scored four unanswered goals in the final 30 minutes of the game to defeat Colgate, 4-2, on Friday, Nov. 23, at Starr Rink. The Warriors improve to 8-4-1 overall this season, while the Raiders' record drops to 3-7-1.

Sam Poyton and Lindsay DiPietro spearheaded the comeback as Poyton scored two goals, including the game-winner with 8:41 left in the third period, and added an assist, while DiPietro assisted on WSU's first three goals.

Colgate took a 1-0 lead with just under two minutes to play in the first period. Junior Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) banged home a rebound off a shot by freshman Hannah Milan (Great Barrington, Mass.).

The Raiders made it 2-0 at the 6:28 mark on the power play. Freshman Jessi Waters (Menlo Park, Calif.) had the puck at the right point, and she found sophomore Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.) just to the left of the crease. Dombovy shot, but WSU goaltender Tiffany Thompson made the save. However, the rebound came to sophomore Beth Rotenberg (Toronto, Ont.) on the right side, and she beat Thompson back-door.

Four minutes later, the Warriors began their comeback. DiPietro shot from the right point, and the rebound came to Poyton on the left side of the crease. Poyton made a quick pass to Tina Vanderhoeven near the goal line, and Vanderhoeven scored on a low-angle shot.

With just 1:06 left to play in the second period, Wayne State tied things up. DiPietro found Poyton in the neutral zone, then Poyton used an outstanding individual effort to get to the goal. She deked her defender to get into the offensive zone untouched, then beat Colgate freshman Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) from the left circle.

Poyton scored what stood up as the game-winner at the 8:41 mark of the third period. DiPietro took the puck from the right circle to below the left before finding a seam and attempting a shot. Plenderleith made the save, but the rebound came to Poyton in front and she scored into the open side.

The Warriors added some insurance with 6:27 left. Ashley King and Emily Berzins set up Janet Babchishin for the goal.

Thompson withstood an early flurry by the Raiders, making 18 of her 35 saves in the first period to help keep her team in the game. Plenderleith registered 21 saves in the loss.

The Raiders will seek revenge in the rematch with the Warriors on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 3:00 p.m.
