Roemer Leads Raiders to 61-47 Victory at Canisius

The Raiders won on Canisius's home floor for the first time since the 1946-47 season.

Kyle Roemer had a game-high 16 points at Canisius.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (11/13/07)—Colgate University senior Kyle Roemer (Martinez, Calif.) scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Raiders to a 61-47 victory over Canisius College in non-conference men’s basketball action this evening at the Koessler Athletic Center. Senior Tim Pounds (Dudley, N.C.) added a career-high 12 points for the Raiders in the win.

Colgate improves to 2-0 overall with the win, while Canisius starts its season at 0-1. The Raiders are 2-0 to start the season for the first time since the 1997-98 season.  The Raiders’ victory is the 10th over Canisius in the 38-game series and the first for Colgate on the Golden Griffins’ home court since the 1946-47 season. It stops a 13-game Canisius home win streak over the Raiders.

Senior Daniel Waddy (Tuscon, Ariz.) contributed 10 points to the effort. Senior Kendall Chones (Cleveland, Ohio) led the charge on the glass with seven rebounds. Junior Alex Woodhouse (Alexandria, Va.) picked up eight points, five boards, and matched his career-high with three assists.
Pawel Malesa led the Golden Griffins with 16 points, while Frank Turner had eight. Tom Vazquez-Simmons pulled down eight boards to lead Canisius.

Colgate was firing on all cylinders in the opening half, hitting 56 percent of its shots from the floor. The Raiders got things started with an 9-0 run to make it 11-3. Canisius battled back to make it 13-12 with back-to-back three-pointers from Pawel Malesa.

That’s when Colgate took over with a 21-4 over the next 10:08 for a 34-14 lead at 2:19 mark. The Raiders held the Golden Griffins without a basket for 7:58 and used balanced scoring for the 20-point lead. Canisius stopped the run with a layup at the 1:54 mark, but Colgate finished with four unanswered for the 38-16 halftime lead.

Canisius came out of the break and went on a little run to cut the lead to 16 points, 53-37, but the Raiders raced back ahead by 21 points with a 7-2 run and a 60-39 lead. The Golden Griffins could not cut into the Colgate lead as the Raiders cruised to the 61-47 victory.

Colgate shot 46.9 percent for the game and 23.1 percent from long range. The Raider defense was outstanding, holding Canisius to just 26.9 percent shooting overall and 29.6 percent from behind the arc.

The Raiders return to action on Nov. 16 vs. Texas State at the 100 Club Classic in Kennesaw, Ga. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
