HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/6/07) – Senior defender
Dan Belke (West Bloomfield, Mich.) scored his first collegiate goal in the 63rd minute to give the Colgate University men’s soccer team a 1-0 win over Army on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Van Doren Field.
Sophomore
Alex Weekes (Stroudsburg, Pa.) took a free kick 30 yards out and sent the ball into the box where Belke found it on the near side and put it past A.J. Glubzinski with a low shot to the right corner pocket at 63:48.
Freshman
Steven Miller (Ivyland, Pa.) had a good chance early in the game when he blasted a shot that was saved just inside the near post, and Weekes nearly scored a goal of his own when he sent a long ball in off a free kick that had to be stopped by a leaping Glubzinkski.
Colgate’s
David Cappuccio (Pittsford, N.Y.) made back-to-back stops with 27 minutes remaining in the contest. Army’s Chase Hunter and Doug Jones both blasted Cappuccio with hard shots that banged off his gloves for the Black Knights’ best chances of the game.
Sophomore
Chris Koontz (Miller Place, N.Y.) nearly gave Colgate a 2-0 lead with 10 minutes remaining when his shot hit the bottom side of the cross bar and came down to land just on the other side of the goal line. Glubzinski jumped out to grab the ball before it had a chance to make any more hops.
Cappuccio made five saves, while Glubzinski stopped seven.
Colgate had a season-high 21 shots to Army’s seven. The Raiders also had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Colgate (5-3-2, 1-0-1 PL) travels to Lafayette on Sunday, Oct. 14 for a 4 p.m., game. The match will be televised on CSTV.
