Leach Propels Colgate to 1-0 Win Over Navy

Junior Matt Leach scored his third game-winning goal of the season in a 1-0 victory over Navy.

HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/27/07) – Colgate University junior Matt Leach (New Canaan, Conn.) scored in the 60th minute to give the Raiders a 1-0 win over Navy on Senior Day, Oct. 27 at Van Doren Field.

Senior Eric Anton (Tacoma, Wash.) had a shot from the left side, but his shot was stopped by a defender and pushed to the right side where sophomore Chris Ross (Hurst, Texas) saw his chance to kick it towards the goal. His shot was redirected out front by Leach who shot it to the right of the goal at 60:21.

In the first half Colgate outshot Navy, 12-2 although just two Raider shots made it on goal. Anton had the best chance of the first half when he picked up a through ball in the 21st minute. He pushed the ball ahead, past goalkeeper Thomas Jenkins, and saved it off the endline and sent a shot in towards the goal but Anton’s defender was able to knock the ball way from the net.

Navy came out in the second and controlled the ball for the first few minutes, not allowing Colgate to get close to its attacking third. The Midshipmen would go on to outshoot the Raiders 10-6.

Anton gave the Raiders a chance to score their second goal when he chipped the ball in from the inside the 18, but the ball went just high of the crossbar and out of play for a Colgate corner kick.

Just a minute later Navy’s Travis King tried the same play and his shot also skimmed over the cross bar and out of play.

Navy put a scare into Colgate with 13:45 remaining, when a throw in made its way into the box. The ball was batted around but Navy’s only shot was blocked by a Colgate player and then kicked out of play to keep the score in the Raiders’ favor.

Navy had a chance again with just under eight minutes to play. A Colgate defender blocked a chance by Matt Tapajcik, but the ball found its way to Mike Porcelli, who sent a low shot in on net but Colgate’s goalkeeper David Cappuccio (Pittsford, N.Y.) was there to make the save and keep the slate clean.

Colgate had an 18-12 advantage in shots and took six corners, while Navy did not have one.

Cappuccio finished the night with three saves in his sixth shutout of the season, while Jenkins also made three saves. Cappuccio's 14 career shutouts moves him into third place all-time in program history.

The Raiders improve to 8-4-3 overall and 4-0-1 in the Patriot League, while the Midshipmen fall to 7-6-2 and 0-5 in the conference.

Colgate is in first place in the league standings with 13 points, while American is second with 10 points with a 3-0-1 record.

Colgate takes to the road for its final two games of the regular season. First up is a stop in Washington, D.C. where the Raiders will hope to secure its first-place standing when they take on American on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m.
