ERIE, Pa. (10/26/07) – The No. 3/4 Mercyhurst College women’s hockey team scored four goals in the first period en route to a 5-1 win over Colgate University on Friday, Oct. 26 at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
The Lakers scored three power-play goals, tripping up the Raiders' perfect penalty-kill percentage, ending the streak at 26.
Mercyhurst quickly got on the board nine seconds after Colgate was delivered a hooking penalty. Sophomore Meghan Agosta connected with junior Hayley McMeekin and freshman Cassea Schols for the first power-play goal at 2:21. The Lakers took a 2-0 lead midway through the first period when freshman Geena Prough beat Colgate goaltender
Elayna Hamashuk (Nepean, Ont.).
Skating with a one-man advantage due to a tripping call on Colgate midway through the first period, the Raiders were signaled for another penalty. Mercyhurst pulled goaltender Laura Hosier in favor of the extra attacker and the Lakers were able to take a 3-0 lead when junior Valerie Chouinard scored the 6x4 goal at 14:10. Just 1:13 later Mercyhurst found the back of the net again with a power-play goal from junior Natalie Payne.
Mercyhurst outshot Colgate 19-9 in the first period. Hamashuk made 13 saves before being replaced by freshman
Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) after 15:23. Plenderleith would make two saves to close out the first period.
The Raiders came out better prepared in the second period and had 17 shots compared to the Lakers’ eight in the final two periods.
Vicki Bendus scored the only goal of the second period, an even-strength goal, to give Mercyhurst a 5-0 lead.
Colgate lit the lamp at 2:11 of the third period with a power-play marker. Freshman
Hannah Milan (Great Barrington, Mass.) received a cross-ice pass from junior
Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) and Milan beat Hosier for the goal. Junior
Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) also received an assist on the goal.
